“Don’t freak out.”

She gave a small laugh after saying it. Her fingers tightened around whatever she was hiding.

My irritation started immediately.

“Maggie.”

She stayed where she was, watching me as though she was trying to judge my mood before coming any closer.

I leaned forward and placed my glass on the coffee table.

“Tell me.”

She took a breath before bringing her hand forward. A pregnancy test rested in her palm. For a second I did not understand why she was showing it to me.

Two lines.

I stared at it then looked at her.

Maggie’s smile widened. “I’m pregnant.”

I looked at the test again, waiting for some other explanation to present itself.

“What?”

“I took three. They were all positive.”

She moved closer and held the test out as though she expected me to take it.

I kept staring at her.

“You’re on birth control.”

Maggie’s eyes dropped toward the test.

I stood.

“You stopped taking it?”

Her shoulders stiffened.

“Richard…”

“You stopped fucking taking it?”

Her head snapped back toward me.

“I was going to tell you.”

“When?”

She stepped around the end of the coffee table, putting a little more space between us.

“When did you stop?”

I watched her fold her arms, tucking the pregnancy test against her side as if hiding it again could somehow reverse the last thirty seconds.

“How long?”
