“You have no idea.”
There’s no humor in his voice and the words settle differently.
I look up and for the first time since meeting him, Ezra Ward looks afraid. Not nervous. Not uncomfortable.
Afraid.
And he’s looking at me.
Before I can ask why, Rhett appears beside us.
I didn’t hear him approach. He just… exists.
I jump. “Jesus fucking Christ.”
He removes his mask.
And… oh. Come the fuck on. This is getting ridiculous.
He’s got dark blond hair, sharp cheekbones, lighter eyes then Ezra with a crooked smile.
Jesus Lord.
Ezra looks like he hasn’t enjoyed anything since electricity was invented but Rhett looks like he’s personally responsible for several warning labels.
“You.”
He grins.
“You talk too?” I ask.
“Constantly.”
“I already like you better.”
“I get that often.”
“No, you don’t,” Ezra says.
Rhett ignores him. “Enjoying your reign, Bride?”
“Immensely.”
“Free drinks?”
“Best job I’ve ever had.”
“Wait until you see the benefits package.” He smirks and Ezra’s head snaps.
“Rhett.”
“What?”
I look between them. “You two are weird.”
“Old friends,” Rhett says easily.
“Unfortunately.” Ezra adds.
