Savage Saints: The Broken Hymn

Toward Malek.

The shift hits me before thought can catch it, a sharp internal recoil like a blade sliding free inside my chest.

“Look at him,” the High Revelation murmurs, reverent now. “The Crowned Wrath. The verse that bled until it learned restraint.”

Torches gutter, acknowledging the title.

“He learned obedience through pain,” the High Revelation continues. “He learned devotion through survival. He learned how to carry faith even after faith stopped loving him back.”

His smile deepens.

“He’s my finest scripture.”

I don’t look away from the High Revelation, but I feel Malek the way you feel gravity change—subtle, unavoidable, devastating.

“You see scars,” the High Revelation murmurs. “I see inheritance.”

The word crawls under my skin.

Inheritance sounds cleaner than ownership. Holier. Like blood can make a cage and call it family.

“You think he was made.” His eyes move to Malek with something too close to pride. “No, child. He was claimed before the knife ever touched him.”

A pause.

“He is mine by blood first.”

The room doesn’t gasp. The Gospel doesn’t need surprise. It needs confirmation.

I feel it then—not shock, not disbelief, but the sick, precise click of something finally aligning. The stillness Malek carries. The containment. The way the Hollowborn listened. The way scripture bent around him without quite touching.

Inheritance, not blood, is how monsters name their children.

“You taught him how to endure.” The High Revelation’s gaze moves to Malek with something that makes my stomach turn. Pride, maybe. Ownership dressed up as love. “I taught him what endurance was for.”

Malek doesn’t move.

That is what scares me.

Not a flinch. Not a breath. Not one visible crack. But something in him shifts anyway, deep enough that I feel it in the space between us, the way you feel a house settle before you know whether it’s going to hold or come down around you.

“A son shaped into wrath,” the High Revelation continues, “so the world would remember what happens when faith is ignored.”

The word son lands like a blade set carefully between ribs.

“And you.” He turns back to me, his voice almost tender now. “You were never meant to be sung.”

His hand lifts, not touching me, but close enough to make the room believe he can.

“You’re what happens after the hymn stops.”

The High Revelation watches them take it in, pleased by the fear before he turns back to me.

“You’re the broken hymn.” His voice is almost gentle. “The part that cracks so the rest of the song can keep pretending it’s whole.”

Behind him, firelight catches the crown wired above the altar—rusted, barbed, blackened by offerings that never earned forgiveness.

His gaze slides to Malek.
