“That was too easy.”

“I don't know what you mean.”

“You're going to ask him.”

“Obviously.”

I pull into the driveway and hit the garage door opener.

Beck leans against the side of his truck, arms crossed over his chest. His eyes move from me to Callie in my passenger seat.

Then he smiles.

I already want to punch him.

We climb out, and I grab the bag from Bramble. Callie cradles Alibi in her arms.

Beck pushes away from his truck. “Morning.”

“Why are you here?”

“Good to see you too.”

Callie comes around the front of my truck. “Hi, Mapquest.”

Beck stops.

Slowly, his head turns toward me, disbelief on his face. “She's still here. And saying my nickname like we’re friends.”

“Obviously.”

His eyebrows rise.

Callie lowers Alibi to the ground, still holding the leash with one hand. Then she hooks her arm through mine. “We're living together.”

Irritation courses through me. “No, we're not.”

“And this is our dog.”

Beck's gaze drops to her arm wrapped around mine. Then to my face. Then past us into the garage. Callie's SUV is parked beside my truck. Then to the dog.

His smile gets bigger.

“Temporarily,” I warn.

He holds up his hands. “I didn't say anything.”

“You were about to.”

“I really wasn't.”

“Your face was.”

Callie pats my arm. “See? Now you understand.”

I pull away from her and head toward the house. “Why are you here, Beck?”

“Bishop sent me.”
