I laugh.
Me: So am I.
Roman: Then why do you keep texting?
Me: Bossy boyfriend.
I wait.
Nothing.
I laugh harder.
“You sure seem happy,” Violet says.
I wipe the smile off my face, trying to play it cool. “Whatever.”
My phone buzzes.
Roman: I'm not your boyfriend.
I beam.
He came back specifically to deny it. That's basically foreplay.
Me: Okay.
I put my phone facedown.
Violet studies me.
“What?”
“Nothing.”
“That's twice you've said nothing while clearly meaning something.”
“You’re keeping secrets.”
“Am not.”
I kind of am. But I’m not telling her that.
When she looks away, my gaze moves to my phone.
I smile.
Roman likes me.
By lunchtime, I've accomplished almost nothing.
Well, that's not entirely true.
I've approved two campaigns, sent revisions to a client, scheduled social media content through Friday, and prevented Violet from using a font that should've died in 2007.
But mentally?
Nothing.
