“I'm actually very nice despite the fact that I'm currently dressed like someone committing a felony.”

Another ear twitch.

“Long story.”

Slowly, the dog shifts. Then takes one cautious step.

I stay still.

Then another step.

The dog keeps going until it reaches the jerky.

The animal sniffs it... Then finally eats it, eyes remaining on me.

My heart squeezes. “Good dog.”

I put another piece a little closer.

This time, he doesn’t wait as long.

I put another piece even closer.

The dog limps toward it, and my stomach twists. His paw is worse than I thought.

“That's it, baby.”

Eventually, he’s close enough for me to touch.

I don't.

I hold out my hand and let the dog decide.

The canine sniffs my fingers.

My breath catches. “Hi.”

A nose touches my palm.

I stay completely still. “You're okay.”

One tiny step. Then another.

I’ve heard staring can feel threatening to dogs, so I glance away, letting my gaze drift over the animal. That’s when I realize he’s male.

He lowers his head, then rests his chin on my knee.

My heart breaks. “Oh.”

His tail taps the pavement.

I'm done.

Completely fucking done.

“Well, shit.” I gently touch the top of his head. He doesn't pull away.

“You’re a good boy, aren’t you?”
