I crouch. “I'm not coming any closer.”
Now that I’m closer, I can see that there’s no collar. The dog’s fur is dirty. The animal is so thin, I can see its ribs.
My chest aches. “Oh, sweetie.”
Its good ear shifts.
“Who did this to you?”
Obviously, the dog doesn't answer.
I lower myself onto the pavement. My jeans are probably ruined, but I don’t care.
My wig slides sideways. I shove it back into place.
The dog watches me.
“Don't judge me. I'm undercover.”
Another ear twitch.
“It's going better than it looks.”
Nothing.
“I had him completely fooled.”
The dog stares at me.
“You're very judgmental for someone hiding beside a dumpster.”
The dog’s nose moves.
Food.
“Oh, right. I shoved the rest of the beef jerky in the pocket of my hoodie.”
Any person doing surveillance should always have snacks and water.
I reach inside and pull it out. I knew carrying snacks would eventually save a life.
I tear open the package. The dog’s nose immediately lifts.
“Oh, you smell that.”
I break off a small piece and place it several feet in front of me.
Then wait.
The dog doesn't move.
“It's okay.”
Sad, hungry eyes stay on mine.
“I won't hurt you.”
Nothing.
