We were both quiet.
I cleared my throat. “So I’m going to find my way out of this orgy and crash at Scarlett’s. I don’t want to be here anymore.”
“Mr. Halifax might still show up.”
I shook my head, making Jacob’s hands fall. We both knew he wouldn’t.
“And you’ll be really sad that you missed him.”
“He doesn’t love me back, Jacob.”
“You don’t know that,” he said.
Don’t I?
“How about you stay. And you can pretend we’re together? So these redheads stay away from me?”
I laughed. “They’re hot.”
“I’m not interested in them.”
“Not even a little bit?” I asked.
“Not even a little bit.”
I sighed. “I was just trying to help.”
“I know. But it would help me a lot more if we could go with my plan.”
I laughed.
“Do we have a deal?”
“Deal. Now can we please get out of here? There’s no way Luis isn’t in here looking for a third.”
“Did I hear my name?” Luis said from somewhere.
I burst out laughing and pulled Jacob out of the room before Luis could find me.
Jacob’s hands fell to my waist when we reached the dance floor. He pulled me in close and I looped my arms behind his neck.
“Dressing like Adam suits you,” I said.
He smiled. “Dressing like Eve suits you. But again, it makes zero sense. Because the whole point of this party is that Adam came before Eve...”
“Shush.”
He laughed.
“Oh! Don’t look now, but Girl #5 is approaching at 2 o’clock.”
Jacob looked over my left shoulder.
“Not your 2 o’clock. Mine. And I said don’t look!”
He started to turn to look in the right direction.
I reached up and buried my fingers in his hair, guiding his face back to mine. “You’re a terrible listener.”
