“Sorry...were you done?”
I nodded.
“So...one plain hot dog?”
“Yes, please.” He shook his head and turned to Scarlett.
“I’ll have the same,” she said.
I turned to her. “See. You love how I order. You wanted it too.”
“I was always gonna get a plain hot dog, weirdo.” She bumped her shoulder against mine.
The guy immediately handed us two hot dogs that had already been sitting there. And we headed back up the stands. When we reached our row, I frowned at the Post-it note that was sticking to the bleachers where I’d been sitting.
Scarlett saw it too and lifted it off the bleacher. “Oh my God.”
“What? Is it from Mr. Halifax?” My heart started racing. If he’d come up here looking for me and I was busy ordering a hotdog I was going to freak out.
Scarlett shook her head, but didn’t elaborate.
I looked down at the note in her hand. “You didn’t save me a seat, Aphrodite. I guess I’ll just have to worship you from afar today.”
It felt like my heart was beating in my throat. I leaned around Scarlett. “Did you guys happen to see who left this?” I asked the two people we’d let squeeze in next to us.
“Oh, yes,” the woman said. “A very handsome man with green eyes and dark hair.”
Scarlett elbowed me in my side. “Did you see where he went?” she asked.
The woman shook her head.
Crap. I grabbed the note and turned in a circle, looking for a pair of green eyes staring back. But I didn’t see anyone even looking in this direction. There was too much blue and orange. Everyone kind of blurred together in the stands.
“He probably saw us run onto the field earlier,” Scarlett said.
“Yeah. Probably.”
“I wish he’d just come talk to you in person though. I’m so over mysteries.”
I laughed. “You’re the one that started this mystery.”
“No I wasn’t. Mystery man did.”
I shook my head and stared down at the field. But it really felt like someone was watching me. I looked down at the note again. There was one thing that really stuck out. The last word. Today. As if he wasn’t going to be worshipping me from afar for much longer.
Axel ran onto the field. Good. He was starting the second half. We’d for sure win now.
But this time I was distracted instead of Scarlett.
Seriously, who was my mystery man? If he was as handsome as Scarlett said he was, why was he hiding his face from me? Did I know him or something?
But Scarlett knew everyone I knew...
I took a deep breath and shoved the note in my pocket. But I couldn’t stop the nagging feeling that someone was watching me.
And as much as I wished it was Mr. Halifax, he was busy doing mascot things. God his ass looked good in feathers.
A chill ran down my spine again and I turned around. But there was no one staring at me. I shook my head and turned back to the field.
