Scarlett bit her lip. And then she quickly typed something out.
“What are you doing?”
“Just asking a simple question.” She showed me her screen. She’d asked him if he’d be at the game on Saturday.
“Why would you text him that?” Jacob asked.
“Because you were all curious.”
Her phone buzzed. “Thanks for inviting me, Scarlett. Save me a seat?”
“Well, that’s a little presumptuous,” she said. “I just asked if he was going.”
“Seriously, who is this asshole?” Axel asked. He looked at me.
“Why are you looking at me like this is my fault? This is your guys’ operation. I wanted nothing to do with it.”
“Operation Mystery Guy was a total fail,” Jacob said.
Scarlett shook her head. “It was not. We have him right where we want him.”
I laughed.
“He’s a total creep, Scar,” Jacob said.
“What is wrong with you guys?” She looked around at them. “He’s not creepy. He’s romantic. He changed his whole profile for Soph. He’s smitten with her.”
“Or a stalker,” Jacob said.
Or a serial killer. That’s what Mr. Halifax had said. When he’d looked at me like he thought I was an idiot. That pain in my chest came back. I didn’t want him to be sick. But the alternative felt worse. Him hating me so much that he was avoiding me.
Scarlett’s phone buzzed with another message: “Tell Aphrodite goodnight for me. And remind her not to make that mistake.”
Freaking asshole! I grabbed the remote and turned on the game. Mr. Halifax wasn’t a mistake. And I didn’t need the back of someone’s head repeatedly telling me so.
I folded my arms across my chest and glared at the TV without really seeing it.
“This guy has really crawled under your skin, hasn’t he?” RJ asked.
“No.”
“Kinda seems like he has,” Liam said.
“Absolutely not.”
Scarlett bumped her arm against mine. “I, for one, can’t wait until Saturday.”
“I hope you have fun getting to know him.”
She sighed.
“No one is getting to know anyone,” Axel said. “Delete the app. Soph’s in love with Mr. Halifax. End of story. We never should have interfered.”
“Thank you, Axel.” But I knew he was just saying that because he was annoyed that this guy was trying to steal a seat next to his girl. I’d take what I could get though.
“Please, Scarlett,” he said, giving her that look I knew she couldn’t resist. “I don’t trust this guy.”
She sighed. “Fine. I’ll delete the app from my phone.” But before she did, she grabbed a notepad off the coffee table and quickly wrote down her username and password. She tried to hand it to me.
