“Are you okay?”

“Mhm. I just can’t believe you’re about to leave the nest. What am I supposed to do without you? I have an idea. What if you skip college and just stay here?”

“You want me to skip college?”

“Yeah, college schmollege. I didn’t learn a thing at Harvard. But that was probably because I was high most of the time. Yeah, no, you should just stay with me.”

I laughed. “Dad.”

He kissed the top of my head.

This seemed like maybe the perfect opportunity to tell him I was skipping out on college...

But then Axel and Jacob walked into the room.

And I was very distracted by the fact that Jacob was with Olivia instead of Girl #5.

Scarlett frowned at Olivia. But then quickly shook her head. “Hey, girl!” she said with way too much enthusiasm. Especially since I knew she hated Olivia. “Where have you been? So glad you’re here. I can’t think of anyone better to share a limo with to my one and only prom.”

Yeah, that was overkill.

My dad sniffed again. “Let’s get some more pictures. I’m gonna need to blow one up and put it on the wall to pretend you’re always here.”

Say what?

He walked away.

I didn’t think my dad was handling the prospect of me leaving soon very well. And I was actually planning on leaving even sooner. Right after graduation instead of at the end of summer. God, what if he freaked out about my news too? I needed him to have my back.

“You look beautiful,” Jacob said and gave me a hug.

“Thanks, you too,” I said without really paying attention.

“Um...thanks? I don’t think anyone’s called me beautiful before.”

I laughed. “You know what I meant. You look very handsome, Miller.” I straightened his bowtie. “But what’s up with Olivia? I thought you’d bring Girl #5?”

He shrugged. “It didn’t work out.”

“Sorry.”

“It’s fine. Olivia really wanted to come.”

What junior didn’t? “But you’re okay?”

“I’m okay, Soph.”

“You swear it?”

He smiled. “I swear it. What about you? You look nervous about something.”

“I’m...”

“Sweetie,” my mom said. “Where is that boyfriend of yours? I’m so excited to meet him.”

Huh. I’d completely forgotten that my mom and Adonis hadn’t officially met. Sure, she’d seen him on the court a ton. But I’d been pretty good at keeping Adonis away from my apartment and my dad’s shenanigans.

“He should be here any minute,” I said.
