Adonis sat down on the edge of his bed. “Just because it’s a pussy doesn’t mean I’ll like her as much as I like you.”
I laughed. “You will. She’s perfect.”
Adonis shook his head.
I knelt down on the ground. “Larry, it’s time to meet your new daddy.” I opened up the front of the cat carrier.
Larry didn’t come out of the cage.
“Larry, come to mommy.” I reached in and pulled Larry out, tucking her against my chest. “Who’s a good girl?” I said and hugged her to me.
She started purring.
“You’re safe here,” I said. “I’ll mix up all your food just the way you like. And you don’t have to be in a confined space ever again. Look at your new home...”
“She doesn’t even want to be here,” Adonis said. “I’ll drive her back to the pet store.”
“But she was sad there.”
“Aphrodite...”
“Adonis, she’s a bit of both of us.”
He just stared at me.
“She can’t go back to the store. They didn’t understand her. She’s a picky eater like me. And look at her pretty green eyes.” I stood up and walked Larry over to him. “See? She’s adorable.”
Adonis shook his head.
I placed her down on his comforter.
“No,” Adonis. “Not on my bed. Scram, cat.”
Larry ignored him and plopped down right next to him on the comforter.
I smiled. I knew Larry would like Adonis too! I’d been a little worried she’d maul him. But it had all worked out.
“This feels very unsanitary. Get her off my bed, Aphrodite.”
“But she likes it. She likes you.”
Adonis sighed. “I’m not sharing my bed with a cat. Shoo.” He waved his hand at Larry, trying to get her off.
I sat down and petted Larry’s head. She stayed where she was.
“Get off my bed,” Adonis said firmly to Larry.
Larry didn’t move.
“Seriously, I don’t want her,” Adonis said. “Shoo.”
Larry stepped closer instead of jumping off. “Meow,” she said in the cutest way possible.
Adonis scooted away from her.
“Come on,” I said. “Larry is perfect. Scarlett and I picked him out just for you.”
Adonis looked up at me. “Pumpkin helped pick her out?”
