Well that was fine, it was easy enough to mix it myself. “We’ll take some of each kind of food then.” Larry was a special cat. I stared at his green eyes. And I loved that he was a little bit me and a little bit Adonis.
“And what does the list mean by ‘other’ cat toys?” I asked.
“He hates all cat toys.”
“Oh. Okay. None of those then.” I smiled. “See,” I said to Scarlett. “Very low maintenance.”
Scarlett didn’t respond. She looked worried.
“I’ll go grab that stuff for you,” the guy said and walked off.
As soon as he was gone, Scarlett stepped closer. “Soph, are you sure this is a good idea?”
“Why wouldn’t it be?”
“I think maybe him being free might be a good sign that no one wants him because he’s awful.”
“Don’t say that about Larry.”
Scarlett raised her eyebrow. “He almost swiped me with his claws.”
“Well, if he decides to be a guard cat, he needs to know when to attack.”
“If he decides...” Scarlett shook her head. “This just feels like a very bad idea. Maybe we should get Adonis a mouse.”
“A mouse? Adonis is a big guy. He’d squash it by accident.”
“If you say so.”
I smiled. “I do. Come on, you can come with me to drop him off.”
“I’m not sure I want to be in the same car with Larry,” she said.
“Don’t be rude. He can hear you.” I pointed to Larry.
Scarlett shivered. “Yeah, no, I’m not getting in a car with him. If he gets out he might kill me.”
“Classic guard cat.”
She laughed.
The pet store guy walked back over with a cat carrier. He opened the little door on the cage and pulled on a pair of elbow length work gloves. He cringed as he reached into the cage and lifted Larry up.
I frowned. “Are you sure Larry is a boy?” He was totally smooth down there.
“No, Larry is a girl.”
“Why is her name Larry?” I asked.
“Because we tried a bunch of other names and she hated all those. We change it every week.”
Poor Larry. I reached out to pet her sweet little head.
“Don’t touch her...” the guy started.
I ignored him and petted Larry. Larry started purring.
“How ‘bout that,” he said. “I’ve never heard Larry purr before.”
