“That does not answer my question.”
“Doesn’t it?”
I just stared at him. “No.”
“Come on, you’re going to freeze out here.”
I shook my head. “It’s fine, I’ll get a ride with someone else.”
“Yeah? With who?” He looked around at the mostly empty parking lot.
I sighed. I must have had my head against the steering wheel for a while. “I’m waiting for RJ.”
“He got a ride with Axel.”
A little heads up would have been nice. I rubbed my hands up and down my arms again.
Adonis walked over to an escalade parked a few spots over from mine. Of course that was his car. It was big and ostentatious, like him.
He opened up the passenger side door. “Get in.”
It really was freezing. And I could call a tow truck from the warmth of my bed. It wasn’t like the car was bothering anyone in the parking lot of Empire High on a weekend.
“Fine,” I said. I climbed into his huge car. His huge, messy car. My foot crunched on a water bottle.
“Sorry about the mess,” Adonis said as he climbed into the car. He tossed his gym bag into the back seat. And then he grabbed some stuff off the floor in front of me and tossed it over his shoulder.
No wonder it was so messy in here if that’s how he cleaned it.
“I should have thought this through,” he said. “It would have been better to get you in a clean car after slicing your tires.”
I gaped at him.
“I’m kidding, Aphrodite.”
I really wasn’t sure if he was.
He slid his key into the ignition and then turned one of the heating vents onto me. He leaned over the center console.
My heart started racing.
For just a second I thought he was going to kiss me.
I was used to his breath pebbling the back of my neck. And a few times his lips had brushed against my ear. And there was that one time when we’d first met that he’d kissed my neck. Hard. He’d left a mark.
But I had no idea what his lips would feel like pressed against mine. I swallowed hard.
He exhaled slowly, a puff of his breath filling the space in front of me. And then he leaned over me instead of toward me and opened the glove compartment.
“I don’t have any tissues,” he said. “But I think I have some paper towels somewhere. Or I guess just one.” He grabbed it and handed it to me. It looked like it had been used before.
I laughed. “I’m fine.”
“Are you? Fine? Really?”
I shrugged.
“Have you given my proposal any thought?”
