“Why did you say you want to prank him again?” my dad asked.
“Because he’s annoying me. And he’s an idiot.”
RJ laughed as he walked into the kitchen. He’d just showered and he’d forgotten a shirt. He hopped up onto the kitchen counter next to my dad. “That is not at all why she wants to prank him.”
I glared at him. And I hoped he could read the “don’t you dare” expression on my face.
“It’s because she has a huge crush on him,” RJ said, ignoring my silent warning.
RJ!
My dad smiled. “Really? You like the guy?” He looked so damn excited. And I really preferred him looking excited over worried. I was starting to worry that my heart breaking may have broken my dad a bit too. And I didn’t want that.
“I...” I didn’t really know what to say. I wanted my dad to stop worrying, but I didn’t want to lie. It was hard to think about liking someone else when I still loved Mr. Halifax.
“She does,” RJ said. “I can tell. But she’d pretending not to and it’s driving Adonis insane.”
“The kid’s name is Adonis? Like the belt?” He pointed to RJ’s exposed Adonis belt.
“Ew,” I said. “Don’t point to RJ’s. And no, not like the belt.”
“Poor lad doesn’t have one?” my dad asked.
“No, he does.”
My dad raised his right eyebrow. “You’ve seen him shirtless? I thought you said he was annoying?”
“He was at the tryouts with RJ. And that’s not the point. His name is Adonis like from Greek mythology. Not because of the belt.” But yeah, he had one worthy of his name.
“Since when have you been interested in Greek mythology?” my dad asked.
“Since meeting Adonis,” RJ said.
“Stop it.” I hit his knee.
My dad smiled at me. “You’re blushing, baby girl.”
“I am not!”
He looked so pleased as he turned to RJ. “Did Adonis make the team too?”
“Yeah, he was freaking amazing. We’re going to win every game.” RJ grabbed a slice of pizza from behind him, forgoing the plate like our dad.
“But he’s like really annoying?” my dad said in a high voice, doing a terrible impersonation of me.
RJ laughed. “No, he’s awesome. You’re going to love him. He’s funny and he’s always teasing Soph. She acts like she doesn’t like it, but she does. He calls her Aphrodite. I guess Adonis and Aphrodite hooked up in Greek mythology or something.”
RJ was such a dirty traitor.
“He sounds great,” my dad said.
“Don’t listen to RJ. Adonis is not great. He’s the opposite of great.”
“Sounds like a pretty decent guy to me.”
“We should have him over soon so you can meet him,” RJ said. “Actually, I don’t think he’s doing anything tonight.” RJ pulled out his phone.
Shit, did he have Adonis’ number too?! “Don’t invite him over here!”
