I looked over at Adonis.
His eyes locked with mine. “I mean...if Aphrodite loves basketball, I don’t think I have a choice.”
“Did you play for your last school?” Liam asked.
“Nah,” Adonis said.
“But you do play?”
He shrugged. “I’ve never played on a school’s team. But I sometimes play in the courts at the park with a few guys I know.”
I tried to hide my smile. Well, this was going to be hilarious. If he wasn’t good enough to be on the team at his last school, he’d probably fit right in with the Empire High basketball team. I couldn’t wait to see him miss bucket after bucket in tryouts tomorrow.
“Well I’m glad that you’re going to try out with us,” RJ said. “These two think they’re too good for the basketball team.” He pointed to Axel and Jacob.
Axel shrugged. “I have no interest in basketball. Besides, the team sucks, guys.”
“It did,” Adonis said. “But they have me now.”
RJ laughed. “I love this guy.”
RJ Hunter! Stop it! Adonis was a cocky asshole. He’d never even been on a team before. It was probably going to go to his head when they let him join. But it would certainly have nothing to do with skill.
“So...Aphrodite.”
“My name is Sophie,” I said.
He smiled. “You know you love when I call you Aphrodite.”
“I do not. I’m not the Aphrodite to your Adonis.”
“Sure you’re not. So, Aphrodite. Tell me about this group project.” His eyes bounced back and forth between me and Jacob.
And I didn’t think he was really asking about the project. He was asking about me and Jacob.
I patted Jacob’s thigh. “Do you want to tell him? I’m going to go get us all a snack. Want anything in particular, big guy?”
Jacob laughed.
Don’t laugh at me! Flirt back!
He quickly cleared his throat. “Yeah, make me that thing you always do. My favorite.”
Perfect. “You got it.” I leaned over and kissed his cheek before standing up.
And then I went into the kitchen, placed my hands on the counter, and exhaled slowly. Adonis was going to think I was dating Jacob. And then Adonis was going to join the basketball team and commit social suicide. Everything was going to be fine.
Except for that tidbit where he knew I banged my teacher. And that I was a bad lay.
Which he could use to ruin me.
I took another deep breath.
“What the heck are you doing?” Scarlett asked as she walked into the kitchen.
“Oh my God, don’t leave all the guys alone in there,” I said. “It’ll practically be like a locker room. And you know what happens in the locker room.”
“Guys take showers?” Scarlett said.
