“You’re being very dramatic right now,” I mocked.
She frowned.
“Don’t look at me like you’re disappointed in me. I can only handle one person being disappointed in me at a time.”
“Who else is disappointed in you?” RJ asked.
“Mr. Halifax. Obviously. Because I’m a bad lay.”
“Stop it,” Jacob said.
“I’m not disappointed in you,” Scarlett said. “I was just...” she shook her head. “I thought I saw...never mind.”
I realized she was looking over my shoulder, not at me.
“Who?” Axel asked.
She shook her head again. “No one. I was just imagining it.”
Scarlett imagining people actually perked me up a bit. I may have been a bad lay, but at least I didn’t see dead people.
“Are you guys excited for the party tomorrow night?” Liam asked.
It felt strange that the world kept turning when I felt frozen. There was already a new party. The Christmas Adam party long gone. And all my hopes and dreams along with it.
Liam was staring at me. And I realized he was mostly just asking me. To see if I’d leave the comfort of my own home for something other than school.
I shrugged.
“Liam and I are thinking about trying out for the basketball team,” RJ said. “The party is after tryouts. Come on, it’ll be fun.”
Well now he was just trying to get a rise out of me. “The basketball team sucks. Don’t be an idiot. And the tryouts were back in December. You guys missed it by a long shot.”
“Apparently they’re recruiting new players this Friday because they do indeed suck,” RJ said. “That’s why the team needs us.”
I stared at him. “You’re being serious? You’re joining the basketball team?”
“Yup.”
It seemed like they were pranking me. But RJ must have gone too small with it, because I wasn’t getting it.
“So far this year they’re defeated,” Liam said.
“Defeated?” I asked.
“Yeah, the opposite of undefeated. They’ve lost every game.”
I actually laughed.
“We should all go to tryouts to cheer for them,” Scarlett said.
“I’m in,” Jacob said. “It’s always fun to watch how bad our basketball team is.”
Axel laughed. “Yeah, this should be good.”
I really didn’t understand this prank.
“You in?” Jacob asked me.
