“No, there’s nothing showing up. I’ll give you something to take the edge off. But don’t take the pills for long. If these symptoms persist, come back to me. I’ll let you know when I get the rest of the results back. Maybe they’ll show me why you’re still feeling sick.”
“So long as I’m good to go on my next mission, that’s all I care about. We’ve got an emet to track.”
“Don’t let it be said I get in the way of a woman and her emet. Enjoy.” Angel handed her a small vial of pills.
Daisy hurried out of the medical room. She almost slammed into Rexx, who was waiting outside. It was the first time she’d seen him since she’d almost sucked the life out of him on the training mat.
“Oh! You’re here. Um, hi.” She turned and sped away.
“You got your test results back?” He strode along beside her.
“Sure. How did you know I’d be here?”
“I figured you’d want to know what was making you unwell as soon as possible in case it effected our next mission.”
“I’m all good. There’s nothing to worry about.”
Rexx caught hold of her shoulder and turned her to face him. “I do worry. We’re partners. I’d hate anything to happen to you.”
“Holy crap! Did I do that to your eye?” Daisy reached up to touch the tender looking bruise beside Rexx’s right eye.
“You’re stronger than you look. Much stronger than I’ve ever seen you before. Yesterday’s session was... different.”
She dropped her hand and shrugged. “I was angry. I lost control.”
“Was that all?”
“Yep. I feel calmer now. I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt you. I was just... I mean, I had some unexpected news. I didn’t mean to lash out at you. You’re right. We’re partners. We shouldn’t take advantage of that, though.”
“You weren’t taking advantage of me.” His gaze dropped to her mouth, and her heart stuttered. Should she say something about their kiss? Explain it was a mistake? Was it a mistake? It had felt too good to be called that.
“I get that you weren’t yourself yesterday.” Rexx’s intense gaze remained on her lips.
“Yeah, I wasn’t. I didn’t mean to mess you around. I wasn’t thinking straight. Everything felt like a weird, uncomfortable mess.”
“Did I help you to straighten out any of that weird mess?”
She gestured along the corridor, needing to keep moving. They walked along together in silence for a few seconds. “My younger sister is getting married.”
“And that’s not good news?” Rexx said.
“It’s not great news.” Daisy bit the inside of her mouth. She’d never told anyone on the Apocalypse what had happened between her and Johnny. She always choked on the words. It was a shameful secret.
“I thought Humans were keen on marriage.”
“It’s not that. I’m not a fan of the guy she’s marrying.”
“He’s a jerk?”
“A massive jerk. The worst kind. My sister even had the nerve to say she wanted me to be her bridesmaid.”
“What does that involve?”
“Stress, bad dresses, too much make-up, basically propping up my younger sister and making sure she has the best day of her life.”
“Then say no.”
Daisy choked out a laugh. “I wish it was that simple. This is about family. My parents have... expectations.”
