Rylie stared at the old records.

“I haven’t thought about Emily in years.”

“That’s understandable.”

“No, it isn’t.” Her voice softened. “We were friends.”

“You were young.”

“So was she.”

I closed the box.

“We’ll need a formal interview.”

Rylie looked at me.

“I thought you came here as my friend.”

“I came here as a detective.”

“That isn’t what I meant.”

The hurt in her voice made something twist inside me.

“We can be both,” I said. “But right now, I need to understand what happened at that camp.”

The door opened.

Trigger stood on the other side.

He looked at Rylie’s face.

“What happened?”

She moved toward him.

“Judy is investigating Emily’s death.”

“Who is Emily?”

“A counselor I worked with. Remember, I told you about the accident.”

Trigger put his arm around her.

“Why?”

Rylie looked at me.

I answered.

“Because the serial killer may have begun killing at Camp Eagle River.”

Trigger’s expression became hard.

“Does that put Rylie in danger?”

“We don’t know.”
