“You were about to.”

Wolf almost smiled.

Judy looked toward Sheriff Tate.

“I need the camp records before dark.”

“We’ll get them.”

“I also need access to the abandoned property tomorrow morning.”

“You’ll have it.”

“I don’t want anyone else there.”

“You won’t be going alone.”

“I have Carson and Will.”

“You’ll also have a deputy who knows the land.”

Judy didn’t like that.

I recognized the way her chin lifted.

She had done the same thing when the waitress told her the restaurant was out of chocolate milkshakes on our first date.

The memory surprised me.

I pushed it away.

Judy looked at the Rangers.

“I don’t want anyone discussing the murders. If the killer is in Eagle River, I don’t want him to know what we’ve discovered.”

“No one here will talk,” Wolf said.

Trigger nodded.

The others did the same.

Judy looked at me last.

I couldn’t tell whether she saw someone she could trust or only someone from a past she barely remembered.

“I know how to keep quiet,” I said.

Something unreadable moved through her eyes.

“Yes,” she said. “You always did.”

She returned to the back room.

The door closed again.

Trigger leaned toward me.

“That sounded personal.”
