Trigger slapped one hand against the bar.

“You said you didn’t remember.”

“I guessed.”

“You remembered,” Rylie said.

“It was a long time ago.”

The back-room door opened.

Sheriff Tate stepped out.

The expression on his face silenced everyone.

Wolf moved first.

“What happened?”

Tate closed the door behind him.

“There have been seven murders near Dallas. They are hunting a serial killer.”

Rylie’s hand found Trigger’s.

I looked toward the room where Judy waited.

“Connected?”

“The detective believes so.”

“Why is she here?” Wolf asked.

“The killer left a message pointing toward Eagle River.”

Everything inside me went still.

Trigger moved closer to Rylie.

“Does the killer have a target here?”

“We don’t know.”

The back-room door opened again.

Judy stood in the doorway.

She looked at Sheriff Tate, then at the Rangers gathered around him.

Her gaze stopped on me.

“This investigation is confidential,” she said.

“So is our security work,” Wolf answered.

“I don’t need private security.”

“No one said you did.”
