“When did you last speak to your father?”

“Yesterday morning.”

“Did you tell him I was in Eagle River?”

Evan hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“He knew you were investigating the murders. And a message on the last victim sent you to Eagle River.”

“How?”

Evan’s face tightened.

I already knew the answer.

So did Judy.

“Robert told him,” she said.

Evan didn’t deny it.

The Mills family had been talking about Judy’s investigation.

Robert knew she was following the victims back to Eagle River.

Evan knew she had arrived.

Joseph Mills—the sheriff who had overseen Emily Ross’s death investigation—knew too.

Three men from the same family.

Three men connected to law enforcement.

And one of them had just tried to create an alibi for another.

Judy handed Evan’s phone to Sheriff Tate. “Photograph it and record the number. Then return it.”

Sheriff Tate carried it into the kitchen.

Evan watched him go. “I want to leave.”

Judy stepped closer. “You can. But before you do, I’m going to give you one chance to tell the truth.”

“About what?”

“Why did you come here?”

“I saw the vehicles.”

“No.”

“That’s the truth.”

“No, it isn’t. You didn’t come because you saw Sheriff Tate’s SUV. You came because someone told you we were searching this house.”
