He gave me a glare that said: Sure, you don’t. And shrugged. “You’re right. You’d probably keep it in a locked box under your mattress with your dirty magazine collection.”

I stepped out of the stall and rolled my eyes. “You’re very funny. You know that?”

“I’m hilarious. It’s one of my few marketable qualities. That and this gorgeous face.”

“Your face is the problem,” I grumbled under my breath without meaning to say it out loud.

Alvin blinked. “What does that mean?”

“It means you should put on some dry clothes.”

He paused in his steps as if he only just realized something. “You ruined our picnic,” he gasped.

“No, the sprinkler ruined your picnic.”

“You turned the sprinkler on.”

“The grass was looking brown.”

“Sure.”

I reached for my locker. Alvin stepped in front of the door before I could open it.

“Why didn’t you go through with it?” I asked him. I didn’t mean to say that out loud either. “With Omar?”

Alvin stared at me.

I felt heat crawl up my neck. “I mean—”

“That’s what you’re asking?”

“Yes.”

He barked out an incredulous laugh. “You really want to have this conversation, DeeDee?”

“No.”

“Excellent. We agree then.”

I rubbed a hand over my face. “You said you were a virgin.”

His expression changed. More sober than I’d seen him look since he had that mock funeral for his pet spider in a three-piece suit with a makeshift coffin he’d fashioned out of an old shoebox. Empty of course. Because the weirdo had the damn thing taxidermied first.

“I am.” Alvin nodded once.

“With like… everything?” I asked, and he nodded. I looked at him. “Really?”

“Why the hell would I lie about that, Darius?”

“I don’t know.” I swallowed hard. “I thought maybe you and Omar had… That you two were gonna…”

“You thought what? That I’d let him take my virginity in the showers while you hid behind the curtain and watched?”

I flinched.

Alvin went still. “Jesus Christ, Dee. How long were you standing there?”

“I don’t know. The whole time. Maybe… I didn’t mean to.”
