Her voice got very soft. “But not if you weren’t here. And you’re not staying.”

He always said that, Switch thought. He’d kept on saying it, but he never left, did he? He’d been waiting for something—something he couldn’t name or put his finger on.

Maybe all the time, he’d been waiting for this.

And the little voice in his head said, Yes.

He said slowly, “What if I did? Stay here, I mean. Gunn wants me to. And the gods know, their security and comms systems need a total overhaul.”

He reached out and ran his fingers through her hair, brushed some leftover mud off her cheek. “What do you say, Doe Eyes? You think we should whip this place into shape?”

She looked up at him, her eyes shining. “You really mean it? You’d stay here for me?”

“Here, Seattle, I don’t care. You make everything better. You make me better.”

She threw her arms around him, and he claimed her lips. Nothing in the entire fucking world was better than this. It was pure bliss.

His wolf murmured, Ours.

It didn’t seem possible. Shit this good didn’t happen to him.

And then she pulled back, looking troubled. “There’s only one thing. Something I have to tell you.”

Deep down inside him, the shit this good doesn’t happen to me warning gong sounded.

But before he could ask what she had to say, her phone started ringing inside the pocket of her hoodie.

Breanna didn’t have a phone.

Breanna couldn’t have a phone. Otherwise, Quentin Moreno could track her.

“What the fuck is that?” His voice came out a growl.

“That’s what I was trying to tell you.”

In half a second, bliss turned to fear and betrayal. He grabbed the phone out of her hand as she pulled it from her pocket—an ultra-slim special model. There was no incoming number showing, just a code.

He stabbed the button and answered. “What?”

Breanna was shaking her head, looking terrified.

“Where’s Breanna?” It was a woman’s voice. Bree reached for the phone, and he pulled it away.

“She’s in the shower,” he said. “Who’s this?”

Breanna grabbed at him. “What are you doing? That’s Kimberly!”

Kimberly? Her friend? Bree was yelling, “I’m here, Kimberly!” Then to him, “Damn you! Give me that!”

He switched the phone to speaker, and a man’s voice came on.

“Breanna,” he said.

All the color drained out of Bree’s face. “Quentin?”

Fuck. It was Moreno.
