This was a bad idea. These weren’t high-school bullies; they were killer wolves. What the hell had she been thinking?
But she was too embarrassed to back out now. At least Switch had come with her.
She hoped this didn’t end up in a fight to the death.
She walked up the rickety stairs of Sanchez’s cabin and knocked on the door. After a moment she heard someone walking around inside, and then the door opened.
Breanna had been hoping it would be Cisco or Matéo, but of course it wasn’t. It was the biggest scariest Sanchez, who apparently didn’t even have a first name.
He stared at her like she was an alien being. “What the fuck do you want?”
Breanna swallowed hard. “Um. I brought you something? You and the others.” She held up the three big gift boxes.
Sanchez scowled. “It’s not turds, is it?” He sniffed. “Or explosives?”
“It’s cookies.”
Sanchez looked at Switch, and then at her. She could see his brain refusing to compute. She ventured, “It’s a thank-you. For your wolves not dismembering me or eating me or anything.”
“We could still eat you.” He looked her insolently up and down.
Um. Which kind of eating did he mean, exactly?
Switch growled. Eek. This might turn into a fight to the death after all.
“Sorry,” she said, summoning up her high school cheerleader perkiness. “You’ll have to settle for these. I didn’t know if you guys like to share—”
That got a feral grin. Damn. More sexual innuendo. “—so I made you separate boxes.”
Sanchez checked out her boobs, and then his gaze dropped to her crotch before he said, “We usually like separate boxes, but sometimes we share. If there’s enough to go around.”
Shit. She opened her mouth again, and Switch said, “Forget it. There’s nothing you can say that he can’t turn sexual.”
Sanchez said, “It’s my superpower.”
Great. So he had two things he could do. “Okay then. I hope the cookies are orgasmic? Have a nice day.” She laid the cookie boxes on the porch and hurried away.
She could hear Sanchez laughing as they walked down the path.
Breanna sneaked a glance at Switch. He looked stunned.
“What?” she asked him. “Shit. He’s going to dismember me after all, isn’t he. You have your gun on you, right? Do you have silver bullets?”
Switch shook his head. “I don’t think I’ve ever heard him laugh before.”
Breanna wasn’t sure that was a good thing. “Was it a ‘human girl is weird but cute’ laugh? Or more like the evil laugh that comes just before they attack and rend someone limb from limb?”
Switch grinned. “With Sanchez? Could go either way, honestly.”
They stopped by the cabin for more boxes, and passed them out around the compound. She’d decided to give some to her friends, who were also scary and therefore eligible for cookies. Boomer and his brother. Dealer, the sexy con man, thief, and fellow Malory’s Peak fan.
Rex and Dobe, Gunn’s right-hand men. Gunn wasn’t around, so she left a box for him in the command center.
As they headed back to the cabin, Switch said, “I don’t suppose you kept any for us.”
“Are you kidding? I need a cookie binge so bad right now. I don’t even care how many calories it is. My nerves are shot.”
After their cookie binge, Switch went to take a shower, complaining (not very seriously) that Breanna had dragged him off to the store that morning without even giving him the chance.
