Gunn said, “You seriously want me to show up uninvited to Thanatos’s lair with a tray of food, like fucking room service?”
“Yeah. And if you don’t bring cream for the coffee, you’re not getting a tip.”
Gunn didn’t even bother to tell him to fuck off—he just hung up. But Switch knew he’d be there. Gunn was good that way, and also, as alpha and commander, he hated when Thanatos did stuff behind his back.
Good thing. For all his fuck-this attitude, Switch would rather face Thanatos with a friend at his back.
After Switch hung up the phone, Breanna asked him, “Why does your boss want to know about Quentin?”
She didn’t mind giving evidence against Quentin, if she could, but she’d like to know what she was getting into at this Big House.
“He’s not my boss,” Switch said, like it was automatic.
Right. He wasn’t staying. “Okay, their boss.”
He glanced sideways at her, as if trying to figure out how much he should say.
“I shouldn’t really tell you this, but... it’s not like you won’t figure it out. These guys do special operations. Not exactly inside the law?”
He was right, that wasn’t exactly hard to figure out. “Like your relocation jobs?”
“Sometimes. Sometimes bigger. Paramilitary operations.” He paused, then said carefully, “Look, they’re not exactly good guys—everyone here has a past. Including me. But they try to take down bad guys. Or at least, worse guys?”
She smiled a little at that. “Worse like Quentin Moreno?”
“Yeah. People who have a lot of money and power, and think they can get away with hurting people because of it.”
A tiny seed of hope blossomed in her heart. “You really think they can take down Quentin?” It had always seemed to her like he was invincible.
Switch swerved to avoid a branch sticking out across the road, and gravel crunched under the tires. “I don’t know. Depends what you’ve got on him, and what else we—they—could come up with. It’s up to the boss, but guys like Moreno are his usual targets. He might go for it. Or if not, like I said, he has a lot of contacts. I asked him to find somewhere else for you to go, since Marie’s operation is out of commission for a bit.”
He’d done that for her? More likely, he’d done it to get her off his hands. She felt absurdly dejected at that thought. She liked Switch. Besides being totally hot, there was something appealing about him and his give-no-fucks attitude. “Do you think he’ll do it?”
“No idea.”
“Well, what’s he like?” It would be good to have some idea how to approach him. Sassy, helpless, whatever it took.
“Um. He wears a hooded robe so you can’t see his face, mostly only interviews people in a dark dungeon, and has no sense of humor.”
“You’re kidding, right?”
“He goes by the name of Thanatos. Greek god of death? So no.”
Yikes. She still hoped he was joking. With Switch it was sometimes hard to tell.
Especially when he added, “On the upside, Gunn is bringing snacks.”
A few minutes later, they arrived at the Big House. Which was huge. A mansion.
The front had enormous carved doors, like a castle, except there were huge pillars at the front made of polished tree trunks instead of stone. Switch parked at random and they walked up to the door, Breanna feeling more and more intimidated.
Luckily, Switch never seemed to be intimidated. She kind of loved that about him.
The door was opened by the guy with the white-blond hair she’d seen last night at the airfield. His name, improbably, seemed to be Sugar.
He tried to turn Switch away, saying, “Just the girl,” but Switch just stood in front of her, hands on hips, and stared at him until he sighed with annoyance. “Fine.”
