“Not anymore.” He smirked at her. “The wolves ate them all.”
He was just about to crack the first egg when his phone rang. It was Sugar.
Switch hit the button. “Hey! Did you talk to Thanatos?”
“Yes. He’s interested in Moreno, and he wants to talk to your girl up at the Big House. Now.”
Shit. He was fucking hungry. But Thanatos was the one who could get Breanna out of here. He needed to get her up there.
Before the doe eyes made him kiss her again.
Chapter 10
Switch hung up the phone and put it in his pocket. “Sorry about breakfast,” he said to Breanna. “But the boss wants to talk to you about Moreno, and the sooner you work the doe-eyed magic on him, the sooner you can get back to your life.”
He felt like a dick as soon as he saw her face. Because of course, she didn’t have a life to go back to.
“Sorry,” he said. “I just meant—Thanatos has money and connections. Hopefully he can find somewhere for you to go. Come on.”
He headed for the door.
She hesitated a minute, then came after him, her too-big boots clopping on the floor. It was cute, but he really should get her ones that fit. Maybe someplace in town?
Let Gunn and Mikey take care of that.
But his mind kept trying to help her anyway. Her being upset had upset his wolf, and now all it wanted was for her to be happy.
Leaving here will make her happy as fuck. We can take her somewhere, and then go home ourselves.
That didn’t seem to make his wolf any happier.
He went to the front door and yelled to Boomer and his brother, “We’re going up to the Big House to see Thanatos. Want to come?”
Boomer’s eyes went wide. “Fuck, no. See you.” He and his brother picked up their guns and their thermos and walked off.
As they went down the steps, Breanna said, “Where is this Big House, exactly?”
“Up the hill.” He pointed to the trail. “Not far. Maybe half a mile?”
“Half a mile?” She stopped dead, grabbing his arm and pulling him back. “I am not walking half a mile.”
She had to be kidding. Half a mile was nothing. Then she held her foot up, and he realized how far it was in shoes that were too big. She’d have blisters before they were halfway there.
“Right,” he said. “Plan B. This way.” He led her over to where the spare vehicles were parked. Sliding inside the first Jeep they came to, he hotwired it, then leaned over and opened the passenger door for her.
“Impressive,” she said, climbing inside.
“I’m good with machines.” Way better than with people.
He backed the Jeep out of its parking space and headed for the road up to the airfield. Halfway up was the turnoff to the Big House.
As they drove, he got out his cell and called Gunn. “Hey, bro. Breanna and I got called into the presence of His Ghoulishness. Did you get an invite?”
“Fuck. No, I didn’t.”
“Well, I’m inviting you. And, also, could you bring breakfast? I was just about to cook ours when the summoning happened, and Breanna is practically fainting with hunger. I need protein, but she requires merely dry toast and a lettuce leaf, since models aren’t allowed to eat anything with a calorie in it.”
Breanna smacked his arm, and he grinned at her.
