“I’ll deal with him,” Draven said, about to go after Isaac.
“No, please,” Penny said. “I promise, I’m okay.”
“You’re not.” I put my arm around her shoulders when a tear streaked down her face.
She swiped it away, and Jasper made a chattering sound from her desk. He was worried, that’s what I was getting from him. Pen ran her hand down her familiar’s back. “Sapphire found out about us, but it’s…it’s going to be okay.”
She was lying. “You don’t need to pretend with us.”
Her fingers curled around the edge of the desk. “She threatened me, Iris.” Her lips trembled. “I’m…I’m scared.” She chewed her lip and looked away, her eyes filling with tears. “Isaac said he’d handle it, but she…she hates me.”
Sapphire hated most people, but Isaac was her only child now, and she’d already have his future mapped out, and there was no way she’d allow Penny to be part of it.
Her gaze met mine. “S-she threatened to…she said she’d go after my dad if I don’t give Isaac up.”
Draven growled.
“What are you going to do?”
She shook her head. “She’s rich and powerful, she has a lot of influence here. If my dad finds out about any of this, he’ll lose his mind. He’ll confront her and he’ll lose his job.”
Nothing about this was okay. Coven Eldridge had lost a lot of their power last year when Isaac’s twin, Elmer, lost his trial against Willow, and it had obviously sent the old bat off the deep end. Maybe this was how she made herself feel powerful now, terrorizing innocent people.
“I don’t like this. Sapphire shouldn’t be allowed to throw around threats like that, and if Isaac cares for you, he’ll shut her down.” I wasn’t confident he would, though. The only person Isaac cared about was himself.
I glanced at Draven. He was gritting his teeth, his gaze darting to the door Isaac had walked out of.
Pen hugged herself. “I’m sure he will.”
I didn’t believe that for a second.
We finally left after I’d made sure she was going to be okay.
Draven glanced down at me, with fire burning in his gaze. “Isaac’s the asshole who sent those demons after you, yes?”
“There’s no proof of that,” I said, instead of answering him.
“That’s a yes, then?” Draven said, fingers curled into tight fists.
Shit.
CHAPTER 34
Iris
The way Draven was gripping the wheel of his truck as we drove out of the city made it obvious he was still worked up over Isaac. Penny had handed me a folder with the information she’d copied from the city records. She wasn’t sure if it was anything, but something was better than nothing at this point, and I’d made Penny promise to let me know if she needed anything. She’d looked terrified as we’d walked away. And I didn’t blame her. Sapphire was pure evil.
“Maybe Isaac will do the right thing and tell his mother to back off,” I said into the silent cab.
Draven’s fingers clenched around the wheel. “The guy’s a piece of shit. I should’ve already ended him for coming after you like he did.”
“You can’t do that. We don’t have any proof it was him, and the last thing my family needs is the council breathing down our necks. Between Warrick killing Elmer last year, then finding a dead witch on our land, we’ve had more attention from them than we’ve ever had.”
“He ordered them to hurt you,” Draven ground out.
I touched his arm. “And you saved me.”
“I acted like a dick.”
