A Vow of Ruin

His eyes spat fire. “You would be wise to keep whatever you think you know to yourself.”

“Or what?” Draven snarled.

Sartori flinched.

“And your witness? They’d confirm this?” I asked and motioned to the bathroom, she was currently in.

He looked furious. “If it came down to it, but your accusations are baseless and ridiculous. I want my daughter back, Miss Thornheart.”

“But screwing your mistress is more important than looking for Amy, or I don’t know, actually giving a shit.” This guy was a giant asshole, but he wasn’t a killer or even a kidnapper. I couldn’t see him planning an abduction between tanning sessions, and he had his hands full with a wife and mistress.

“Are we done here?” he bit out.

“We sure are.”

“You’ll pay for this outrage,” he spat.

I spun back to him. “If you do anything, anything at all against my coven or my pack, I will make sure your wife knows what a pig you really are. Though I suspect she knows that already.” Then I walked away.

I cursed several times. I was furious that I still didn’t have any answers, and I was pissed off on Amy and her mother’s behalf.

“Iris.” Draven grabbed my hand.

I shoved the door open and walked out onto the street. “How fucking dare he threaten us? Who the hell does he think he is? People like him make me sick. They don’t know the meaning of the word family. By blood or by choice, you take care of the people you love. You don’t do what that selfish fucker is doing. Jesus, his daughter is missing and all he cares about is keeping his affair a secret.”

Draven gave my hand a squeeze. “Iris.”

I stopped my angry march down the sidewalk and turned to him.

“Your pack?” he said in a way I couldn’t read.

My face heated, I had said that, hadn’t I? “I-I just meant…I didn’t mean…” He cupped the side of my face and pressed his thumb to my lips, shutting down my stuttering.

“That’s the first time you’ve said that…your pack.” His gaze searched mine, and my heart raced. “I love that you feel that way, petal. A whole fucking lot.”

I didn’t know what I’d say, even if I could speak, but I didn’t have to worry about that because he kissed me, soft and intense and packed with emotion. When he lifted his head again, I struggled to look him in the eyes, but Draven wouldn’t allow anything else. He took my chin between his fingers, his stare locking on mine.

I wasn’t a wolf shifter, but even I found it hard to disobey him when he was intense like this. And, right now, he wanted my gaze on his. He wanted to see right into my soul, and the way the green of his eyes darkened, I thought he might actually be able to.

I was starting to think there wasn’t anything this male couldn’t do when he decided on it.

He tucked my hair behind my ear. “Let’s go see your friend, then I want to take you home,” he said in a rough voice.

“Okay.” If he’d said, let’s go to the moon right then, with that voice and that look in his eyes, I would have jumped on board his rocket ship and waited for him to call out the countdown.

He took my hand, the hold possessive, protective, reassuring, and he led me to his truck.

Draven held my hand the whole drive to the council building, and as we strode across the foyer and down the hall.

“Why won’t you listen to me?” I heard Penny say ahead of us.

We rounded the corner, and on the other side of the large room was Penny’s desk. She stood behind it, Isaac Eldridge right there in her space. He loomed over her, his hands on her upper arms. She was upset. He leaned in and said something I couldn’t hear.

I started toward them. I knew that asshole would hurt her. Isaac glanced over his shoulder at us, released her, and with a scowl, took off.

I rushed to Penny. “Are you okay?”

She was trembling, her eyes glistening with unshed tears.
