“Ah…sorry.” I scratched my neck. “Didn’t mean that.” I helped her up.
“Smooth, T!” Killian lifted his can to me, and Callum had a big goofy grin on his face.
I smiled awkwardly at the girls. “I’ve got a mate now. You understand that, right?”
They nodded. But they clearly didn’t care. Braids grabbed my hand and pressed it against her stomach, while Cat Paws wrapped both her arms around my neck.
What. The. Fuck.
Lucien surfaced, my vision flashing red. “Bite their heads off. Use them for bowling. Mate likes bowling.”
I shoved him back, hard, fear surging. Fear of Lucien bursting out and murdering them. Fear of my mate thinking I’d cheated on her.
Heart hammering, I untangled myself from the giggling pair, who were looking at me like I was their favorite toy.
“Leave.” I used my Alpha voice, with a glimpse of fangs. “Don’t come back.”
They bolted.
My stomach churned, their touch repulsive, and I collapsed onto the couch.
“That was hilarious!” Killian wheezed. My eyes fell to the burger in his hands. I stole it, stuffing half of it into my mouth.
I was starving. Fear always stressed me out, but hunger was quick to follow.
Two pizzas and twelve chicken wings later, I felt mildly satisfied.
I glanced at the time on the TV, then checked my phone again. My small smile exploded into a full-blown grin at a particular text from a certain someone, grasshoppers hopping around my belly. People called them butterflies but Gran always said grasshoppers. She never trusted worms that flew.
Hey, sorry for my lateness, my phone died. On my way now.
I grinned at lateness and replied immediately.
No worries, didn’t even notice ;) Text me when you pull up so I can come get you downstairs
I hit send, then typed another text.
Drive safe, Bunny Doc. And don’t forget to change gears
I still didn’t like the idea of her driving a manual for fifty minutes, but the stubborn she-wolf hadn’t let me pick her up. Called me a misogynist for offering, too.
Her response was quick.
You didn’t notice? :( And I already told you, Grandpa taught me to drive when I was ten! I’m pretty sure I’m a better driver than you.
I scoffed. Then frowned.
Are you texting while driving? And yeah, I noticed. A lot. Missed you
Of course I’m not driving! I’m just sitting in my car, Rudy.
I was about to tell her to get moving when another text popped up—a selfie with the caption,
See?
A sigh left me. That bright smile and those blue eyes. My hands and arms itched.
Beautiful. Now put the phone away and hurry up. But don’t speed
