“You’ve met my mate before?” His gaze bounced between us.“How? When? Why?”
“You spilled my drinks!”
Trix’s face broke into a grin so large it crinkled the corners of her eyes. “I told you I’d introduce you to my brother, but that he was a complete slut, undeserving of someone nice like you!”
“You did!”
We hugged again, tighter. I already loved her.
“Care to elaborate?”
My mate hated being left out and I had the impression he’d been looking forward to introducing me to his family. Bella and I already meeting had robbed him of the full experience.
I waved to dismiss it. “Oh, we just met at a bar once.” A bar…while I was on a date with Sillas. The same guy you beat unconscious because your jealousy has the emotional maturity of a rabid badger. The same night Bellatrix bumped into me and spilled the drinks I’d gotten for him.
Amazing what I could omit after learning from the master himself. Karma, Rudy.
“Yeah!” Bellatrix winked. “And you owe me.”
I laughed loudly. Logan wasn’t laughing at all; his arms were folded over his chest, brows pushing together.
“That poor guy never stood a chance.” Bellatrix was unaware of the landmine she’d just stepped on. “If I’d known you were my brother’s mate, I’d have dumped the whole glass on him!”
Silver eyes pierced the side of my face. Uh-oh.
“And crap, you two almost met that night, but Logan was late as usual—”
“Which. Guy.” If voices controlled the weather, we’d have a blizzard inside the airport.
Bellatrix chewed her lip. “Oops!”
Logan’s right eye twitched. “Explain.”
I fumbled with my gloves, and one landed on the floor. That night was also when Logan had felt the pain through the mate bond because I slept with Sillas, a pain much bigger than what a normal werewolf would feel. Lucien had taken over then, uprooting trees, overturning cars, and causing injuries. A sour memory.
“Just a date.” I touched his chest. “Before we met.”
Logan glanced down at my hand, then up at me. Our gazes held as I smiled. The left corner of his mouth lifted. Good.
Lachlan chose that moment to join the were-party, headphones on, hoodie up, mid-yawn.
My heartbeat tripled. Logan must’ve heard it because he rolled his eyes. “Not going to happen, Bunny Doc.”
Still, we both looked back at the giant werewolf dragging his feet across the terminal.
Lachlan’s blue eyes landed on Bellatrix. Her mouth parted.
And then…
Nothing.
No growls, no declarations of Mate mine!, no electricity tingling the air.
Disappointment dropped over me like a rain-soaked blanket.
“MacKenzie.”
“Draven.”
