I fished my phone out of my pocket, scrolling down my contact list. “Hey, Lucy.”
My fluffy mate emitted a snort…or a growl. Hard to distinguish his sounds.
“I have a special childhood friend. Well, actually, he’s more like another brother.” I studied the meat skewered on his black claw. Who needs forks anymore?
Lucien stopped chewing. “He?” His lip curled. “Lucien don’t like hes.”
I bit back a smile, pressing the call button. “I want to call him.” I am already doing that. “To ask if he knows”—how you and Logan can reconnect. If he can help you shift back—“more about lycans.”
Lucien narrowed his eyes. “Has this he found his mate?”
Ring, ring.
“Not exactly.” My palms started to sweat. “But she is somewhere. For sure! Everyone has a mate.”
“But—”
The ringing stopped. “Vy!” A smooth, masculine voice startled us.
I shot Lucien an apologetic smile. Archie’s face filled the screen, wind whipping at his pitch-black hair. Pine trees loomed behind him, like a crowd watching over his shoulders.
“Chie!”
“How’s Scotland? Still making honey?”
“Yes! Lachlan more than me.” My gaze bounced from Archie to Lucien. The latter bolted up, second steak forgotten, flies already descending on it.
Archie lifted a brow. “What was that?”
“Oh, that’s a who.” I backed away from Lucien, who was stalking closer. “Remember my mate?”
“The Terminator. Have you decided whether to reject him or—”
A horrific growl sliced through my eardrums.
In one stride, Lucien was behind me, towering over my shoulder in all his glory, glaring at the screen with an intensity capable of traveling through the line.
Archie narrowed his amethyst eyes in return. Unlike any other dominant werewolf, he didn’t growl back. Because he wasn’t a werewolf. Some lunatics claimed that when Archie shifted, the sun would flee and the sky would cry out of fear. His beast was black enough to swallow moonlight, broken only by three small scarlet birthmarks beneath one eye—tears of ancient pain.
Thank Stephen, Archie never got mad.
“And who are you, lycan? Why are you with my Vy?” Chills ran down my spine at his altered voice.
“Mate mineeee!”
The screen fogged up with Lucien’s roar. I rescued my phone before he crushed it. “Calm down, Lucy. Archie can help us.”
Goddess forbid these two ever fought…
“Lucien doesn’t like this Archie-enemy.” His incorrect grammar increased whenever he was agitated.
“Archie,” the latter corrected. “Wait. Did I hear mate?”
I huffed out a chuckle and, to my satisfaction, Lucien blushed. It happened every single time I laughed.
“So, the Masturbator’s a lycan?”
“It’s Lucien!” He definitely didn’t appreciate that Lachlan’s nickname had spread overseas.
