Logan flushed. “What did you say?!”

“Why Human embarrassed? Human no virgin.” He’d mated whole herds of females.

“Yes. I mean, I’m not, but it doesn’t matter,” he drawled. Our heartbeat accelerated but I had no idea why.

“We can’t not mate her. She’s our mate!” I retorted.

We should also have a puppy, or, better yet, twins. I licked my gums. Yes, Lucien wants twins.

Logan grunted and, once again, I sniffed his embarrassment. “Let me make it clear,” he huffed. “There’ll be no puppies for a long time! And that’s if she’ll let me be with her sometime in the next few years.”

“Years? But Lucien’ll die!” It didn’t make sense at all.

“And our first time has to be special. Planned.”

“Planned? I don’t understand this word, but Lucien no like it.”

With a wince, I glanced back at my mate. She was stretched onto her stomach now, feet kicking through the air. For blood circulation. She made me do the same many times, too.

“No pups! We’re twenty-three!”

I pouted, my tail dropping.

“Don’t get me wrong,” Logan growled out. “Bunny Doc, in my bed, moaning my name…ah. That picture’s haunted me since she called me Rudolph for the first time.” He smiled.“And I didn’t even know she was mine back then.”

Just the thought of the kiss they shared at that party stirred him. My tail fanned across the grass.

“So, when mating?”

Human laughed. “First, she must feel comfortable and accept me fully…and give us signs she wants to.”

Signs?!

My confusion spiked. These odd human courtships didn’t make sense. An annoyed growl slipped out and two elders walking past flinched.

Mate looked up from her book. “Lucien.”

“Lucien not docile enough for Mate?” I wasn’t in a good mood. Signs, planning, Mate being comfortable with mating—all concepts I didn’t understand. A headache was brewing. Humans were unnecessarily complex.

“What do you mean?”

Frustrated with Logan’s new information, I scooped her up and held her against my chest. She weighed nothing more than a kitten. Not that I ever held one, but I imagined a kitten weighing like her.

It had become a ritual: her, in my arms, and me hiding her from everyone’s eyes.

Everyone, except… “Enjoy your last few hours, cause tonight? I’ll come back.”

CHAPTER EIGHT

YVAINE

“Lucien not shift back today.”

Those were the only words he’d spoken in the past hour. With a resigned sigh, using a finger as a bookmark, I closed the book.

Lucien was fairly occupied, gnawing on a rare steak—his version of beef jerky. After he’d tracked blood across the packhouse carpet for the second time and accidentally murdered nine potted plants with his tail, my family had banned him from coming indoors until he shifted back. Which should happen today.

I need a plan.
