“That?”

“You know.”

“You mean fucking you?”

My palm clamped over his foul mouth. Some pack members strolled past, waving and smiling at us.

“We’re about to go see your family!”

And Logan’s grandmother.

He read my unguarded thoughts. “Grandma canceled at the last minute.”

“Why?”

“She hates you,” he said nonchalantly.

“How’s that possible?”

I adored grandmothers and they adored me back! Makena’s grandma still mailed me mabuyu from Kenya every single year.

“She’s obsessed with this other chick. Smart, beautiful, perfect for me, blah, blah, blah.”

My eye twitched, a lycan feature I had inherited.

“I think her name was…Teresa?”

I was about to calmly explain that his grandmother would inevitably love me once she met me, but then Logan halted. I took two more steps before realizing he wasn’t beside me anymore.

Something, or someone, had struck a spell, turning Logan to stone. His muscles were locked, his breath suspended.

His eyes though?

They could ignite a forest.

I followed his gaze to a human woman standing between two pines.

My instincts recoiled before my mind understood why. I couldn’t sense her wolf, yet nothing about her felt human.

She didn’t merely stand still. She was motionless, like an oil painting someone had forgotten to breathe life into. Even the wind seemed to split around her.

Ageless and tall, she had ash-blond hair that drifted to her thin hips and gray eyes that reflected the fading light. She was beautiful, terribly so. Beautiful the way winter lakes are, cold enough to drown you beneath perfect, unbroken ice.

“Hi, baby.” She smiled at Logan, revealing white teeth. “Look at you. You’ve grown.” A pause. “Still so handsome.”

Her eyes fell on me, her gaze so penetrating I felt like it was slicing me open to have a look inside.

Her right eyelid started to tick…

Lycan.

I still couldn’t sense others—not yet. Lycans concealed themselves well.

“Is this your mate?” Her nostrils flared almost imperceptibly. “Ah. You’ve completed the bond.” Her eye twitched again. “A newborn lycan.”

Her words stirred Logan.

“How dare you come here, Francisca!” he seethed like never before. I’d not seen him like this in wereball or even with my twin. This was a new world of rage.
