His eyes were an incredible show in that moment, a battlefield. The red fought against the silver while the wolf and the man tried to overpower each other.

Red eyes won. “Human not good enough for Mate!”

Silver eyes regained control. “You almost amputated her father’s hand, you stupid mutt!”

Red again. “Human let another male touch Mate! Human can’t protect Mate!”

The silver-eyed version of Logan snarled, headbutting the wall. The crack made me gasp and he glanced at me, blood streaming down his temple. He paled at my shocked face but then red took over again.

“You scared Mate!” Lucien’s voice broke my heart. “Lucien will kill male that touched.”

Logan clasped his head in his hands, panting.

“Get Sillas and Gaius as far away as possible,” I heard my father order Lachlan. The two were right behind me, watching in utter shock.

My hands cupped his face, thumbs stroking his burning skin. “Hey, hey.” His breath hitched. “Look at me. Both of you.”

Time stopped. It was just me and them, meeting each other’s eyes. Blue, red, and silver.

We held gazes forever, forehead to forehead, until he shut his multi-colored eyes.

“Lucien always protects Mate.” His voice was almost solemn. “Always here.”

“I know. I can feel you, Lucy.”

When I looked up, his irises had returned to their usual silver color, but his hair…

It remained as black as a moonless night. As if Lucien had decided to leave a piece of himself behind.

And I loved it.

“That wasn’t so bad, was it?”

“Your dad sure asks unusual questions,” Logan commented from his spot on my neck. “But he’s cool.” Lifting his head, he glanced at me, guiltily. “Hope he didn’t mind about the hand.”

“I’m sure he found your little show impressive.”

Back home after dinner with my family, Logan and I were tangled together on the couch under a blanket, Godzilla playing in the background. Dad and Lachlan walked in, Zeus waddling after them, tail held high.

As soon as Dad noticed our position, he stared at our blanket and then at Logan’s arm around my waist. I suppressed a laugh when Logan withdrew his arm, took my hand instead, and glanced at Dad, who gave him a small nod, like some mafia boss granting permission.

Then Logan paused. “Is that a…raccoon?”

I grinned, sitting up, and patted my leg. Zeus scampered over with a cry, then eyed Logan resentfully.

“Logan, meet Zeus!”

Logan blinked at me like I was crazy. “I assumed it was a dog.” He looked Zeus up and down. “It’s huge. How much food do you give it?”

Zeus bared every tooth he owned and Logan’s eyes flashed red for a split second. “What species is he?”

“A Canadian raccoon.” I scratched behind Zeus’s ears. “I rescued him from an illegal circus and we’ve been inseparable ever since. Haven’t we?” I cooed at him. Zeus chittered and licked my hand.

“We’ve had him since he was a baby,” Dad said from the doorway. “He grew up around wolves. It’s our pack mascot.”

Lachlan smirked. “Lucien’s not jealous of him…right?”

Logan snorted. “Course not! It’s just a pet.”
