“Just bring them to my room.”
“They’re ebooks. You can read them on any device.”
“Is that what you’re always staring at on your phone during your parties?”
The sudden blush on her cheeks gives her away. I’m definitely coming back to this topic. If I stay on it now, we’ll end up skipping the questionnaire portion of today.
“What’s your favorite food?”
“I’m not telling you,” she says, using my answer from earlier.
“You think I’m gonna make fun of you based on the kind of food you like? What, is it caviar?”
“No.” She practically mumbles, “It’s baked potato.”
“Baked potato?” This is the girl that’s supposed to cost millions we’re talking about here.
“See? You’re making fun.”
“I’m not. I just… That’s not expensive at all.”
“Why does it have to be expensive?”
“Because you’re you.”
“What is that supposed to mean?”
I give her a flat look. “You have money, Kota. You come from money. You can, and probably have, eaten expensive foods like caviar.”
She doesn’t say anything, and I realize I am, in fact, making fun of her.
“All right. What is it about baked potatoes you like?”
“Usually, I only have the microwaved version—”
“Which is shit compared to fresh out of the oven.”
“Exactly,” she says excitedly, making my grin widen. “So whenever I go out, and there’s baked potato on the menu, I order that.”
“But why? What do you like about it?”
“There’s just something comforting about it, the flavor and the smell. I don’t know. I just, like, love it so much.”
I’m keeping that info for later, too.
“What’s your favorite color?”
“Redbreast orange.”
“Red-what?”
“Redbreast. It’s another word for robin. The bird. Connecticut’s state bird and Littoral’s mascot.”
That I’m gonna ignore. For now.
“Favorite memory?”
Now she’s grinning, too.
