7 Minutes in Sea Haven

Guy whispers something in her ear and I don’t need to hear him to know what he’s saying. He’s going for her.

Unless I can get there before he does.

If I don’t…

I glance around at the other girls in attendance, all of them pretty and yet not one of them holding an ounce of appeal.

The pillowcase makes its way to our group, and I find myself hesitating. What if I don’t get Kota? I’m not kissing anyone else here. And I sure as hell don’t want to stumble across Kota with Guy.

“What happens if you don’t play?” I ask the girl with the phone collection.

“Nonplayers go to Seymour’s shack.”

“For real?”

She shrugs. “We can’t have people with phones running around filming shit they don’t have permission to.”

“That’s what everyone else in this world does.” Everyone’s always filming everything, no regard for who’s in their videos at all.

“We have some important people in attendance. A senator’s son, a model-slash-actress, a few hedge fund managers…”

There it is. The real reason my dad wanted me to come so bad. Deep pockets and loose morals is already a winning combination. Add booze to the mix and it’s almost too easy.

“…and rumor has it there might even be a cage fighter around here somewhere.” Grinning, she looks me up and down.

“No shit,” I deadpan before placing my phone on the top of the pile.

“What about a motorcycle heiress?” Dex asks her as he tosses his in.

“I haven’t heard that one.”

“Ever?” Tina questions, getting a nod from her brother.

“She’s hot.”

“I don’t think she even lives in Sea Haven anymore.”

“How could Ever Munreaux leave the birthplace of Munreaux Motorcycles?”

Tina shrugs. “I don’t know. Rich people do weird stuff.”

“Yeah, we do,” he replies before asking, “Are you putting yours in?”

“Nope.”

After the pillowcase girl moves on, I ask Tina, “There’s no one here you want to kiss?”

She gives me a funny look I can’t even begin to decipher.

Instead, I give the attendees another scan, this time the men. I spy a few Rolexes, a couple gold chains, and a diamond-encrusted bracelet. If I hadn’t been focused on Kota all night, I would’ve noticed sooner.

After all the phones are collected, the same girl as before speaks up again. “The rules of the game are simple! Prey, you will get a blindfold! If you choose to use it, please, for the love of God, do not put it over your eyes until after you’ve found a good spot to wait in! They don’t call this forest the Wandering Rocks Woods for nothing!”

If I wasn’t sober, I’d swear someone spiked my drink because what the fuck did she just say? Prey? Wandering rocks?

“What is this shit?” I ask anyone that will answer.

Everyone’s attention is divided as blindfolds get handed out, including mine now that Kota’s got one in her grasp, her eyes bouncing around like she’s taking stock of the attendees, too.
