7 Minutes in Sea Haven

I’m just tugging my shirt down when I reach the foyer.

“Where’s Kota?” I ask some random, who only gives a shrug in response.

That seems to be the answer of the night because by the time I make it to the basement, not one person can tell me where the hostess is.

Inside the natatorium, Dex greets me with a cup that’s more foam than beer.

“You see Kota yet?”

He shakes his head but points over at the waterfall. “There’s her man.”

I spot Guy, caging in my stepsister against the stone wall.

“That’s not a fucking man.”

Dex chuckles. “I don’t think I’ll ever like any of my sisters’ boyfriends either.”

“Tina likes girls, too.”

“I think I’d be fine with girlfriends. It’s just dudes…” He gives one strolling by us a disgusted once-over. “I don’t trust them.”

“We are them.”

“Exactly.”

We tap our cups together in cheers, then pull from our foamy drinks. I keep an eye on Guy, hoping to catch sight of Kota, but he’s relentless in keeping her to himself.

I’m growing pretty restless watching it, about to call it a night, when he twists to address someone, and I see her. Except it’s not her at all.

My feet automatically pull me in that direction.

As I get closer, I hear the tail end of Guy’s sentence, a low “make it a two-man, then we’d really have some fun.”

I stand behind him, every intention of listening to where that conversation’s going, but the girl realizes I’m here and notifies Guy with her eyes.

“Can I help you?”

Fucking prick. I want to knock him out so bad.

“I haven’t seen Kota around. You know where she is?”

“She left a while ago.”

“Where?”

“I don’t know. Upstairs?”

“And she didn’t come back?”

With a snarky-as-shit tone, Guy says, “Does it look like it?” then scans the natatorium like even he’s not sure.

The blonde leans toward me, eyelashes all aflutter.

“Hi. I’m Lisann.”

I stare at her outstretched hand. I know who the fuck she is and what she’s about. Refusing to touch any part of her, I openly ignore her attempt at a handshake to question her instead.

“Why’d Kota go upstairs?”
