I don’t react.

Didn’t get this far by being easy to read.

“Get dressed,” I say. “We’re going out.”

Her brows draw together slightly. “Out where?”

“You’ll see.”

Rex leans in the doorway behind me, grinning with excitement. “Trust us, darlin’. You’re gonna like it.”

“That is not reassuring,” she says, but there’s a smile tugging at her mouth already.

Fletcher appears a second later, keys in hand. “Give her ten minutes.”

She looks between the three of us, suspicious and curious and a little amused.

“Okay,” she says slowly. “But if this is something weird, I reserve the right to complain.”

“That’s fair,” I say.

She disappears down the hall.

Rex lets out a breath. “You think she’s gonna lose her mind?”

“Yes,” Fletcher says.

“Hopefully in a good way,” Rex adds.

I don’t say anything.

The drive out is quiet.

June sits beside me, watching the road as it shifts from town to trees to the stretch of land leading out toward the property.

She notices before we turn in.

“Wait,” she says, sitting up slightly. “Where are we going? I kinda just assumed we were going to pick up Evan from Sandra’s…”

“You’ll see,” I repeat.

She narrows her eyes at me. “That’s getting less cute.”

Rex laughs from the back. “You say that now.”

I turn onto the drive, and the house comes into view slowly, framed by trees and open sky.

June goes completely still.

I park and kill the engine.

Nothing moves.

Then she says, very quietly, “What is this?”

I look at her.

“This,” I say, “is ours.”
