“I should go back,” she says.

The room shifts.

“To the school,” she continues before anyone can ask. “If Denise is involved, or if she knows something, I need to hear it from her. In person.”

“No,” I say.

Her eyes flash immediately. “Wayne—”

“Not alone,” I correct, stepping closer. “You’re not going alone.”

“I wasn’t going to—”

“You’re not going without us,” Fletcher jumps in.

Rex nods. “Not happening.”

She looks between the three of us, frustration flickering across her face. “I can handle myself.”

“I know you can,” I answer. “But that’s not what this is about.”

“Then what is it about?”

“It’s about the fact that someone has been targeting you, repeatedly,” I say, not raising my voice but not softening it either. “And now we finally have something that points somewhere real. That means we don’t take chances with it.”

She holds my gaze, stubborn as a mule, but I can see the exhaustion sitting underneath it now.

I let my tone ease just slightly.

“We go together,” I say.

Fletcher nods once. “All of us.”

Rex adds, “You don’t walk into that by yourself, June.”

She exhales slowly, looking between us.

Then she nods. “Okay. When?”

“As soon as we can,” I tell her.

Because I can feel it settling in my gut now, the same way it did when the first email came through.

This isn’t over.

Not even close.

And whatever this turns into, we’re not waiting for it to find us again.

We’re going to find it and face it.

CHAPTER THIRTY-NINE

June

The road feels longer going back than it did when I left.

Not because the distance has changed, but because I have, and that difference sits heavy in my chest with every mile that passes beneath the tires. The last time I drove away from this place, I was running on adrenaline and hurt and the kind of desperation that doesn’t leave room for reflection. I didn’t look back.
