I crouch beside Evan first, keeping my tone easy. “Hey, bud. You good for a bit?”

He nods without looking up, still focused on the toy. “Yeah.”

I ruffle his hair and stand again, gesturing for June to follow me.

We move into the living room, not far, but far enough to keep things contained.

I open the laptop and turn it toward her.

“Another email,” I say.

She hesitates for half a second before stepping closer.

I watch her read. The shift is immediate. Her shoulders tighten, her mouth presses thin, her eyes moving faster over certain lines, trying not to let them land fully.

By the time she finishes, she just exhales. “It’s the same stuff.”

“Yeah,” I answer. “But there’s something in it that matters.”

She looks up at me, brows pulling together. “What?”

“That line,” I say. “You don’t know her like I do.”

I see it register.

“June,” I continue. “Who knew where you were going?”

She blinks. “What do you mean?”

“When you left,” I say. “When you came here. Who knew where you were headed?”

She thinks about it, her expression shifting as she goes back through it. “My ex didn’t,” she says first. “I didn’t tell him anything. I blocked him before I left.”

“Your friends?”

“I didn’t really tell anyone,” she admits. “I just… left.”

I nod once. “The school?”

Her breath catches.

“The receptionist,” she says, quieter now. “Denise. She’s the only one I told. I gave her the address in case anything came through. Mail, updates… I didn’t think—”

“You weren’t supposed to,” I say.

She looks back at the screen, then at me again. “You think it’s her?”

“I think it’s a connection,” I tell her. “And right now, it’s the only one we’ve got.”

She turns slightly, pacing a step before stopping again, arms wrapping around herself. “But why would she do that?” she asks, more to herself than to me. “She was nice to me. She didn’t even agree with them firing me.”

“Nice doesn’t mean clean,” Rex says from the doorway.

June turns, startled slightly. Fletcher’s behind him, both of them already keyed into the situation.

“Pike’s looking into it,” Fletcher adds. “We’ll get more. Oh, and Wayne, we couldn’t just wait. Hank has everything under control at the garage.”

I nod, but it’s June whose mind is clearly already moving ahead.
