“Moon,” he said.
Her breathing turned shallow. “That was her name.” Mayhem’s stomach dropped.
“How would she know your mother’s name?” Tempest asked.
“I never talk about my mother to anyone,” Moon said.
Moon looked toward the door. “She had to have known her.” Mayhem didn’t like the certainty in her voice—not one fucking bit. Moon pressed the button again. “How did you know her?”
The woman’s tone changed. She sounded less cold and almost sad. “Your mother belonged to us before she ran.”
Mayhem’s wolf surged. Moon whispered, “Belonged? No one belonged to anyone.”
“That is what she taught you?” the woman asked.
“That’s what I know,” Moon insisted.
“Selene was Silver Blood,” the woman said.
Moon stopped breathing, and Mayhem felt it. “Moon.”
She waved him off. “What does that mean?”
“Your mother never told you?” the woman asked.
“No,” Moon said.
“Then perhaps she was wiser than I gave her credit for,” the woman said.
Moon’s anger flashed. “Stop talking in riddles.” Mayhem smiled faintly, and the woman outside seemed amused at Moon’s tone.
“Silver Bloods were healers once. Not doctors, not medics, but healers in the old sense of the word.”
Moon looked at her grandmother’s journal. “The Blood Seer.”
“Yes,” the woman said.
Tempest muttered, “I really hate where this is going.”
Mayhem agreed, but Moon continued. “My grandmother wrote about her.”
“Of course she did,” the woman said.
“Who are you?” Moon asked.
“My name is Morrigan,” the woman said.
Chrome appeared at the bottom of the stairs. “Of course it fucking is.” Chris came down behind him, and Moon glanced back.
“What do you mean by that?” Chris asked.
Chrome shrugged. “That’s an evil witch name if I ever heard one.” Chris smacked the back of his shoulder. “Ow.”
“Let her talk,” Chris said. Mayhem bit back a laugh, and Morrigan continued.
“I’ve led the Hollow Pack since your mother escaped.” Moon froze, and the entire room seemed to go still around them. “Before that, your grandmother led the pack. I knew her well, too.”
“Wait, you’re over one hundred years old?” Tempest asked.
