I shrug. “I prefer that to a doormat. I like her fire.”

“She likes you too, you know.”

I lick my lips. “I sure hope so. She does let me get my di…appendage wet more often than not. If she didn’t like me, I would have some serious concerns. Starting with what she laces my coffee with in the morning.”

“You joke, but I can see it. You two hated each other at first, right?”

I think over her words. “Hate may be strong. I never hated her. I thought her smart mouth might cause issues for the club, though. She was attached, but not attached, if that makes sense. As Reaper’s sister, she had privileges, but she didn’t have an old man to keep her in line. I thought that would be a problem. The women who were unattached in my past always seemed to cause problems.”

Kaitlyn snorts. “Do not let Evelyn hear you say that old ladies need an old man to keep them in line. I think you will find yourself missing your favorite toy.”

She waves toward my crotch.

“I know. She’s changed my view on things. I spent so long thinking she would be a problem that I never really considered that she might be a solution.”

“Your eyes are open now,” Kaitlyn states.

“Wide fucking open, and I am seeing the world through a new lens,” I admit.

She smiles. “I’m happy for you. Her too. She works too much. If she didn’t end up with you, I’m afraid she would have spent her life alone. She needs someone who will complement her life. Someone who has their own thing so that they don’t get upset when she has to work late or gets called in for an emergency. She would have never lasted with a normal guy.”

“No, I don’t think she would have,” I hum my agreement.

She cleans up Kolby before taking him out of his highchair and setting him on the ground. He runs at me, so I pick him up and swing him around.

“You’d be a great father. Kolby loves you. He loves the others too, but he says your name most often.” Her soft words light a fire in me.

It’s that same image I haven’t been able to get out of my head. Evelyn naked with a round belly, my baby growing inside.

“I love the little man too. He’s pretty cool. Isn’t that right?”

“Airplane,” Kolby demands.

I laugh and reposition him so I can fly him around like an airplane. Kaitlyn watches with a smile on her face.

“Seriously, your kid will be lucky. Just like my Kolby is. Come on, Kolby. Uncle Hades needs to feed Aunt Evelyn, and you need a nap.”

I set Kolby down, laughing when he runs from the kitchen. Kaitlyn follows, yelling for him as she does.

I lean against the counter and think about the future.

It’s looking a whole lot brighter.

Evelyn

We have been poring through documents all afternoon. My eyes are blurry, but I refuse to give up.

Atticus said we can win this, and I’m going to do whatever I have to do to help him with my case.

“Don’t you want to go fuck Hades or something? Please. I can’t take much more of this,” Trigger groans from beside me.

I stop my humming to look over at him. “What am I doing now that bothers you?”

He gives me an “are you kidding?” look.

“You make a lot of noise. I prefer quiet.”

I pause, thinking back to the last hour. I guess I have been making noise. Singing songs in my head while examining everything we have.
