“Don’t look,” Lainey told me through a fake smile, “but Justin’s here. And I think he’s on a date.”
Of course, I immediately scanned the bar area.
Sure enough, he sat at a table with Rob, Katelyn, and Emily. Justin looked sexy as sin in a blue Chicago Cubs t-shirt and matching Cubs hat that he wore backward. His five o’clock shadow rounded out the whole casual date look. Although his eyes were glued to the TV while the other three seemed engrossed in conversation.
Emily saw me at the front, and with a smirk, casually put her hand on Justin’s back.
I quietly told Lainey, “I think I’m going to go home.”
“No! We can go somewhere else.”
I laughed. “Where? There’s nowhere else to go in town. You guys are dressed up. Stay. Have fun. I’ll catch up with you tomorrow.”
Lainey protested. “We can all just head back to my place.”
“No, Nicole and Hannah want to try and meet someone. They’re not going to do that in your living room. It’s fine. Really.”
My friend leaned over and hugged me. “I’m sorry, babe.”
“Yeah, me too.”
Chapter Thirty-Eight
Kristy
I let the tears flow on my drive home.
I couldn’t even be mad at him. He’d warned me he wouldn’t wait forever.
It sucked to think I might have missed my chance for happiness because I’d decided to wait another week to talk to him. Although, who knows. He might have started seeing her a while ago, and talking to him wouldn’t have mattered anyway.
“You’re going to be okay,” I whispered to myself as I turned into the Orchard Hill development. Then I sobbed/laughed as I continued, “You might have to move, so you don’t run into him when he marries Emily and has beautiful babies… but you’re going to be okay.”
I’d heard the saying that time heals all wounds. I wondered how long it would take for my heart to heal.
“Oh, for fucks sake, Kristy Marie! You didn’t even date him that long!”
But it’d been long enough. I’d gone to therapy and completely changed my way of thinking because I’d met him.
Maybe one day I’d be married and have him to thank for it.
The thought brought little consolation.
I wiped the tears from my eyes as I pulled into my garage. I was going to change into a pair of sweats and an oversized t-shirt, grab a tub of ice cream, and curl up on the couch next to my dog to watch mindless TV.
After grabbing my purse, I stepped out of the car and heard, “I’m not dating Emily.”

Justin
Kristy softly closed her car door as she looked over at me.
“That’s not what I saw.”
