Rob leaned over and in a low voice, commented, “I hope this doesn’t suck, otherwise there’s going to be a lot of pissed off people bitching they gave up fireworks for this.”
While I had complete confidence in Kristy’s abilities, I knew she was only responsible for the planning, fundraising, and hiring of the drone company. She didn’t have anything to do with the actual show itself—that was all on the drone operators.
“Yeah, I know. I think it’s going to be cool.”
“It better be, or it’ll be a long time before the town’s willing to try again.”
I knew Kristy was well aware of that and had been under a lot of pressure to make sure everything went off without a hitch.
Finally, the street lights went dark, and a hush fell over the crowd.
Then she quietly sat down next to me in the chair I’d brought for her, wrung her hands in her lap, and murmured, “Here goes nothing.”

Kristy
I was nervous as hell when the sky above the park lit up as the drones took to the sky. I really needed this show to be a success. At the first formation, people oohed and aahed, and I felt myself relax a little.
Justin reached for my hand and glanced over at me with a reassuring smile.
I appreciated how he’d been content to sit back and let me work without pouting that I wasn’t paying attention to him.
I’d had too many experiences of exactly that. Whether it was the fall festival, or the winter carnival, or the fundraiser for the park pavilion… if I went with a date, they were whiny little bitches about being ignored, and frankly, I’d resented it. They knew I had shit to do. If they needed attention from me, then they shouldn’t have gone.
In fact, I was hesitant to even agree to sit with Justin tonight. I didn’t want him to have any expectations of me.
But he seemed happy to stay out of my way, like I’d told him last night.
I tilted to my side to whisper in his ear, “Thanks for being a good sport about being ignored.”
“Baby, I’m a grown-ass man. You don’t have to entertain me. I’m happy to sit back and watch you shine.”
Huh. A grown-ass man.
Maybe that’s what I’d been missing in my life.
Nope! I’m not going there. Justin is not my boyfriend. And he never will be.

When the grand finale started, he cupped my face and whispered, “I’m so fucking proud of you,” then planted a kiss on my lips.
I allowed myself to briefly enjoy the moment before pulling away and hissing, “You can’t kiss me in public!”
“Nobody’s watching. They’re all paying attention to the show.”
Then he kissed me again. Firmer this time, and I easily got lost in the blissful feeling of being adored.
It wasn’t until people started whistling and cheering that I remembered my surroundings and quickly broke the kiss.
Touching my lips, I glanced around. He was right, no one was looking at us.
I stood up and told him, “I need to make sure the drone guys don’t need anything else from me.”
“Go do your thing. Come over to my place when you’re done.”
I nodded and went back to work.
