“Is that really a thing? I thought that was only in the movies.”
“Oh, it’s definitely a thing. And women love it.”
“What? No, they don’t.”
“It’s adorable how naïve you’re pretending to be. Don’t act like you don’t know that half the women who came there tonight did so with the hope of going home with you.”
“No, they didn’t.”
I turned my head to look at him head on. “Puh-lease.”
“Okay, maybe one or two,” he conceded while he made the turn into our neighborhood. “But nowhere close to half. And I don’t care about what they think anyway. I just want to know what you think.”
“Hmm… what do I think?” The alcohol in my brain decided now was the perfect time to drop some truth bombs. “I think you’re incredibly hot. Obviously smart. Witty and thoughtful, and I really would like to sleep with you again.”
A small smile crept across his features, then he turned onto my street, and I clicked the garage door opener so he could pull in.
He shut off the car, took off his seatbelt, and turned to face me. “So, when are you available for dinner?”

Instead of answering, Kristy launched herself at me.
At first, I was taken aback and my fight instinct surfaced—a byproduct of being embedded with a Marine battalion on and off for four years, until an RPG hit the medic tent where I’d been treating three Marines for heat exhaustion.
But once her lips found mine, I quickly relaxed and wrapped an arm around her. The kiss wasn’t hurried or frantic, it felt more like we were getting reacquainted as our tongues tangled for control.
The two-seater car made it impossible to do anything more than make out across the console—much to the chagrin of my dick that my zipper was now punching a hole in.
I hadn’t thought about the fact her neighbors could be watching until the garage door light shut off automatically, and it occurred to me that we were now hidden by the darkness.
“Let’s go inside,” she whispered against my mouth.
I wanted to go inside with her so damn badly. Actually, I didn’t even want to wait to get in the house, I wanted to bend her over the hood of her Miata and fuck her right there in the garage.
But I knew what she was doing. She hadn’t given me an answer about going on a date, and I was serious that I didn’t want a situationship, or worse, with her.
I pulled back and tucked her hair behind her ear while I studied her face.
“I should probably go.”
“Go?”
“Yeah. I can walk home from here.”
“You want to go home. Now.” She wasn’t asking—it was more like an incredulous statement.
“I think I should.”
She scrambled to extract herself from my embrace, then got out of the car and slammed her door. “Well, thanks for driving me home. Happy birthday.”
Without another word she stormed into the house and let the door close behind her with a loud thunk! A grin escaped my lips when I heard the lock being thrown.
I loved her feistiness.
The garage door started coming down the second I stepped onto the driveway, and my walk home was filled with doubt about whether I’d done the right thing.
