I hesitated, hoping to get a better offer.

Fortunately, Kristy piped up. “He lives two streets over from me. I can take him.”

Rob looked at me with a knowing smile. “Great, thanks.”

Although when she swayed on her feet once she stood up, she waved her fob at me. “Maybe you should drive.”

Chapter Six

Kristy

I was surprised that Justin was able to fold his body so easily into my little convertible, although I think having the top down helped.

“How tall are you, anyway?” I asked as he pulled the seatbelt across his body.

“Depends on the day. Most days I’m six-three.”

“What?” My tipsy brain couldn’t comprehend what he’d just said. “How? Huh?”

He chuckled and pushed the button to start the engine. “Sometimes my shoes are shorter.”

“That makes no sense,” I grumbled while he put the car in drive.

I quickly forgot what we were talking about when I felt his fingers intertwine with mine.

“Thank you again for coming tonight.”

“Of course. That’s what friends do.”

He took his eyes off the road to ask, “Are we still pretending we’re just friends?”

“A situationship?”

“I don’t want that with you.”

“Friends with benefits?”

“Hell no!”

“What do you want then? I’m not looking for a boyfriend or anything serious.”

“I just want to take you out to dinner and then go from there.”

“If we go out to dinner, the whole town’s going to talk.”

He chuckled as he slowed for a stop sign. “I hate to break it to you, beautiful, but they already are.”

“And whose fault is that? Yours! You just had to have me walk around with you.”

The little voice inside my head whispered, “You could have said no.”

I half-expected him to say the same thing, but instead, he said, “You’re right, it’s my fault. But in my defense—that really is your wheelhouse while I’m like a fish out of water.”

“You’re a lot better than you realize.”

“I’ll take your word for it because I felt like a bumbling idiot.”

“No. You’re more like the strong, silent type.”
