I stroke her hair and kiss her on the forehead.
“It’s going to be okay, baby. I don’t know what happened but you’re safe now. I swear I’m not going to leave you alone.”
Mia takes a huge gulp of air as if she wasn’t able to breathe before and wraps her arms around me and sobs into my chest uncontrollably.
I hold her a little tighter as Jagger motions to me that he’s leaving the room. I imagine the doctor must be here. McKinley goes with him looking like she feels as useless as I do.
“You did so good, Angel. So fucking good. You stayed alive and that’s all that matters.”
I kiss her cheek but stay away from the cut.
“Are you injured anywhere other than your face? I need to know before I lift you to put you on the bed.”
Her voice comes out low and raw as if it’s strained from crying, “No.”
“I’m going to lift you in my arms and carry you to the bed. The doctor is here and he’s going to need to get a good look at you to make sure you’re okay.”
Mia digs her hands into my chest, and clutches onto my shirt as she lifts her gaze to mine.
“Don’t leave me. Please don’t leave me.”
I rise off the floor with her in my arms and promise to not go anywhere.
“Even if the doctor asks me to leave, I’m not. I will be with you. You’re going to get very sick of me because you aren’t going to be alone for a second.”
She moves to wrap her arms around my neck but stops.
“I have blood all over me.”
“Put your arms around my neck, Angel. We will both get cleaned up later.”

Chapter Sixty
MIA
The doctor comes in along with Jagger and McKinley and looks at Jett.
“You can all wait outside. I’ll come and talk to you when I’m done examining her.”
Jett shakes his head and growls, “I am not fucking leaving her. You can examine her with me in the room or you can fuck off and I’ll find another damn doctor.”
“Jett,” I gasp.
I love him but sometimes his manners are really lacking.
Jagger laughs as if he’s not surprised at all.
“McKinley and I will wait downstairs but she’s going to want a few minutes with Mia before we go home.”
I don’t say anything but there’s also the matter of two dead bodies which the doctor has not said a word about. I assume he must be paid very well for his silence.
“Where can I wash my hands?”
Jett points to the bathroom and the doctor shakes his head as he steps over Marc’s dead body. He comes back and goes to his bag and puts gloves on before coming over to me.
“We’re going to get a look at this cut on your face first. It looks painful.”
