I nod but I don’t tell her that every fucking day will be spent with her whether she likes it or not. I’m keeping that to myself because I’m not an idiot, if I scare her this will be a steeper uphill climb than it already is.
“I’m going to tell you about our last night together. You need to know everything that happened after the concert, Mia.”
She shakes her head and a tear rolls down her cheek.
“I don’t want to. It hurts.”
Squeezing her eyes shut tight, her bottom lip trembles as she says, “Please stop hurting me.”
Those four words sound like the most devastating ones in the English language. There are none that crush my heart more than these.
I place my hand on the hem of her shirt and slide my hand underneath, just to feel her skin on my fingertips.
“Angel, I waited for you. I figured you were with McKinley so I went to get in the shower.”
She interrupts, “One of the security guys told me to wait and give you fifteen minutes so I did.”
I flash her a sad smile, “That makes sense, but I did not tell him that.”
Her eyes are on mine so I continue.
“I was in the shower and a woman came up behind me. I didn’t immediately turn around because I thought it was you. Then I felt the needle jab my skin. I was confused once the drugs hit my system, Angel. So fucking confused.”
Mia’s eyes show so much anguish and it guts me. It doesn’t matter that it wasn’t my fault. What it’s done to her is clearly fucking visible.
“Please undo my handcuffs, Jett. I’m listening. Okay?”
Rising onto my knees, I undo her restraints and toss them on the black end table beside her bed.
“Thank you. Continue.” She says as she rubs at her wrists.
“I swear to you, Angel. I thought she was you. It wasn’t until I saw you in the doorway that I began to realize but when I looked back at her, I still saw you. That’s the only reason I didn’t get up and go to you.”
Her lip trembles again as she cries, tears streaming down her face endlessly.
“You continued. It was like I didn’t exist, Jett. I’ll never forget what I saw or how I felt.”
I pull her into my arms and sigh from relief when she doesn’t push me away.
“Samantha left the door open. She wanted you to walk in on that, Angel. Not me. I did not want her. Drugs were the only way that could’ve happened, and she knew it.”
She pulls her head back and looks at me with profound sadness in her expression.
“I’m sorry she did that to you, Jett. That’s rape. Thank you for telling me but-”
I don’t let her finish her words because I don’t want to hear them. Leaning my head down I gently swipe my tongue over her lips before kissing her. Mia’s lips are like heaven and everything I’ve craved for three long months but she turns her head and breaks our kiss.
“Jett, I’m sorry this happened but I can’t. I’ll never get that image out of my head. Even now, I’m thinking about you fucking her. It hurts to even feel your kiss. You should probably go.”
The pain is instant. It can’t end this way. I didn’t do this. How can I be punished for that bitches obsession?
“I didn’t do anything to lose you. We have to make it through this. Please don’t punish me. Tell me what to do and I’ll do it.”
She shakes her head as she moves further away from me.
“I don’t think there’s anything you can do, Jett. I know this isn’t your fault. You didn’t cheat on me and I’m glad I know that, but I can’t get it out of my head. You fucking her will never go away. If you can make me forget it, then maybe but until then I don’t see a way out. It’s too painful.”
Fucking Geoff of all people pops into my mind. Something he once said to me also seems to fit this situation.
