Part I
“There’s but one guarantee in life. If something good comes my way, I’ll destroy it. That’s what I do. I wreck everything.”

Two Years Ago…
Dark Notes are known for their parties, so it’s not unusual to have the odd non-musician celebrity grace us with their presence. Mia Montgomery is a rare appearance at our parties, known for drugs, alcohol, and bad behavior. Her back is turned to me, but I know it’s her. I have every inch of her body memorized. She confirms it for me when she tosses her head back in laughter.
Beautiful Angel.
Tonight will be like every other night. I’ll beg like the pathetic fucker I am for one night with her. Who am I kidding, one night will never be enough for me. I will keep her. I know the dance we play. Flirtatious looks, exchanged breathy whispers and then the inevitable moment she turns me down. That’s okay, we both know there will be a next time. One day, though I don’t know the circumstances, she’s going to say yes. I’ll ask a million times if I have to.
I walk over to her and place my arm around her waist as I wave off the asshole she’s talking to. Zach from Asylum knows better than to stick around when I’ve told him to get lost. My obsession with Mia is not exactly a well-kept secret. Neither is my penchant for violence.
“Hello, Angel.” I breathe against her neck, allowing her intoxicating scent to fill me. She smells like a mixture of gardenias and honey. I simply cannot get enough of it.
“Jett.” She exhales in a breathy whisper, giving me an instant hard-on.
When she turns around so she’s facing me, the blush on her cheeks is telling. Mia lifts her eyes to mine, and just like that, every person in this room vanishes. She’s wearing a transparent, shimmery dress that only conceals the spots I really want to see.
And touch.
“I want you.”
She says the same words she always says to me. Nothing has changed.
“Are you clean, Rockstar?”
I could lie, but that would buy me one night. When she finds out I’m lying, I’d lose her, and I don’t want Mia for one night. I want so much more.
Fuck. I need so much more.
“No, Angel. I’m not.”
Addicts are known for being lying sacks of shit. And for anyone else, I’d probably do exactly that. But Mia is not anyone else.
She places her hand on the side of my face, and I inhale sharply, enjoying her warmth.
“You deserve better than you give yourself, Jett. I know you want me and I want you too, but not like this. I’m worthy of being treated right. Being taken care of. How can you take care of me when you can’t even do right by yourself?”
I brush my lips over hers, nearly falling to my knees as I feel her soft lips on mine.
“You are worthy of being treated right. You’re a fucking goddess. I’ll never give up. If you let it happen, you could fall for me.”
Tilting her head back, she stares into my eyes, hers filled with regret.
“You don’t get it, Rockstar. I feel the weight of this thing between us. You’re right. I could fall completely in love with you. And that's exactly what I’m afraid of.”
I know better than anyone that I’m not good for her. She’s right to try to steer clear of me. I’m a fucking wrecking ball. If you’re in my path the pain will be real. So fucking real. But like any other addict—I want what I want, when I want it. We don’t consider the destruction we cause for those we claim to love. This is a selfish disease and I’m a selfish fucking man.
